The Silesian University of Technology is a leader in implementation doctorates
The Silesian University of Technology is a leader in implementation doctorates. The latest report of the Łukasiewicz Research Network shows that our University - with over 270 implementation doctorates - ranks first (16% nationwide).
At the Silesian University of Technology, implementation doctorates are carried out in almost all scientific disciplines and account for about 40% of all doctorates.
- “In my opinion, it is one of the most successful ministerial programs of this type. It allows for real cooperation between science and industry. It is used by all parties: PhD students, universities and enterprises. The company obtains the rights to all solutions and patents that will arise. The doctoral student will obtain a doctoral degree, and at the same time will have already implemented specific technological solutions; in addition, the doctoral student receives a scholarship. In turn, the benefit for the Silesian University of Technology is that innovative technologies are created under the supervision of our university promoters”- said the director of the Doctoral School of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Tadeusz Wieczorek.
The broad socio-economic environment of the University also contributes to the great interest in this program at the Silesian University of Technology.
- “In our region, we have a high density of industry and plants in the field of innovative technologies, and our research workers willingly and actively cooperate with them” - added prof. Wieczorek.
Currently, the Silesian University of Technology is carrying out over 270 implementation doctorates. The program is new, it is currently in its sixth edition. The first implementation doctoral students have already defended their doctoral theses.
In the first five editions of the program, 2,293 projects were positively assessed and recommended for implementation. Comparing this with the number of all doctorates carried out in the last five years, it appears that over 7% of doctoral students in Poland participate in the "Implementation doctorate" program. So far, 66 universities from 21 Polish cities have participated in the program. The vast majority of implementation doctorates (63.7%) concerns engineering and technical sciences.
The aim and assumption of the implementation doctorate program is to create conditions for the development of cooperation between the entities of the higher education and science system and the socio-economic environment, conducted within doctoral schools. The program consists in educating doctoral students in cooperation with their employing entrepreneurs or other entities, the effect of which are technological implementations developed by doctoral students.
