The Silesian University of Technology has signed an important agreement for women in nuclear science

During the 10th anniversary of Women in Nuclear Poland, the Silesian University of Technology has become a signatory of the cooperation agreement with Women in Nuclear Poland and the Declaration for Equality. On behalf of the Silesian University of Technology, the documents were signed by Dr Hab. Eng. Łukasz Bartela, Prof. SUT.

On the 15th of December, during the anniversary of the decade of activity of the Women in Nuclear Poland (WIN Poland) Association, the Declaration for Equality and Support of Women in Nuclear Energy was signed. Among the signatories of the document was the Silesian University of Technology, confirming its commitment to activities for the development of competences, equal opportunities, and long-term human resources for the Polish nuclear sector.

- I am convinced that cooperation with the Association will bring a lot of good to our University. Such initiatives are important for the national economy, which is to a large extent going through the transition “from carbon to atom.” The popularization of nuclear energy and the training of personnel for its construction and operation are key to fulfilling the assumptions of the national nuclear program. Both WIN Poland and Silesian University of Technology have ambitions and opportunities to join together and effectively in these areas of activity and thus support the required construction of the nuclear sector in our country – assured Dr Hab. Eng. Łukasz Bartela, Prof. SUT, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Silesian University of Technology.

Since 2015, WIN Poland has been operating within WIN Global and WIN Europe structures, conducting educational, mentoring, and networking initiatives aimed at women working or planning careers in nuclear energy, science, and industry. The activity of the organization is part of a broader debate about the availability of personnel and competences necessary for the implementation of the Polish nuclear program.

The Declaration for Equality was also signed by representatives of key institutions and companies of the sector, i.e. EDF Representation in Poland, Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology, National Centre for Nuclear Research, Polish Nuclear Power Plants, Westinghouse Electric Poland, and Department of Radioactive Waste Disposal.

The document refers to building a work environment based on equality, high competences, and long-term development of staff.

At the same time, the cooperation between WIN Poland and the Silesian University of Technology was formalized. The agreement concerns joint activities in the areas of education, competence development, and expert facilities for the nuclear sector, which will require the involvement of thousands of highly qualified personnel in the coming years.

Signing the Declaration and strengthening institutional cooperation constitute an important step toward strengthening the human resources potential of the Polish nuclear program, in which technical universities, such as the Silesian University of Technology, play a key role.
