The Silesian University of Technology and the City of Katowice strengthen their cooperation

On October 14th, 2026, the Silesian University of Technology and the City of Katowice signed a cooperation agreement that opens up new possibilities for joint scientific and research activities and implementation of innovative solutions responding to the needs of the city and the region. The document was signed during the official inauguration of the academic year at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology in Katowice.

The document was signed by Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk, the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, and Dr Eng. Marcin Krupa, the President of Katowice. The agreement organizes the existing forms of cooperation and sets the directions for its further development.

– Silesian University of Technology declares a decisive increase in commitment to the region. We will try to be more involved in solving various urban problems. We also count on the support of the city in infrastructure activities – emphasized the Rector.

The agreement includes both scientific and research cooperation as well as the involvement of the city in the teaching activities of the university.

- This agreement is open-ended. It does not limit the areas of our cooperation, but it gives grounds for undertaking joint actions, as well as for applying for external funds – he added.

The President of Katowice, Dr Eng. Marcin Krupa stressed that the cooperation could bring benefits to both the university and the city and can become a space for testing new solutions.

– We have put down various possibilities of cooperation and joint actions for the development of the Silesian University of Technology, but also of the city of Katowice. It is about conducting research on the “living organism,” which is the city, improving its functioning, and at the same time supporting the development of science and creating solutions that can be tested in practice – said the president.

One of the areas in which the knowledge of scientists can support local government is broadly understood city transport. It includes, among others, traffic engineering, logistics, the selection of public transport rolling stock and the search for new transport solutions that will improve the movement around the city without increasing the number of vehicles on the streets.

The city also declares its readiness to share data for research purposes. The first ideas for joint research are already being considered. One of the topics is the organization of traffic in connection with the reconstruction of railway line E65 and the closure of viaducts, which causes difficulties for drivers and other traffic participants.

- We want to use models that will allow us to take into account these changes and improve the possibilities of movement of residents around the city and outside it, - the president of Katowice explained.

The signed agreement does not limit cooperation to the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering only. It is open and creates space for developing further scientific, didactic and implementation initiatives, responding to the current needs of the city and the region.

The agreement between the Silesian University of Technology and the City of Katowice was signed during the solemn inauguration of the academic year at the Faculty of Transport and

Aviation Engineering, but it does not only concern the activities of this faculty. Today, the ceremonial signing of the agreement was attended by representatives of the academic community – students, doctoral students and employees of the Silesian University of Technology but also partners of the Faculty from the socio-economic environment.
