The Silesian University of Technology and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics have signed an agreement

Joint activities for the education of students and doctoral students, scientific research, projects, or academic exchanges – Silesian University of Technology has signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Technology and Economics in Budapest. Special emphasis on the exchange of experience in education and research has been placed on issues related to energy.

The Budapest University of Technology and Economics is a university whose origins date back to the 17th century. Today, it educates at eight faculties, in areas similar to the didactic activity of the Silesian University of Technology.

- The essence of this cooperation is to explore issues in the field of energy, nuclear technology and other fields of engineering, said András Nemeslaki, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. – In our activity we are guided primarily by the well-being of students, therefore we hope that it will be possible to launch mutual academic exchange of both students and academic staff as well as joint research, which would be an excellent solution due to geographical proximity and cultural similarities.

The Budapest university, like the Silesian University of Technology, educates in the field of energy and nuclear technology. Hungary has a nuclear power plant located about 100 km from the capital, which generates about half of the country’s electricity production. It is planned to expand the nuclear power plant by adding more reactors. Similarly to Poland, the construction of small modular SMR reactors is also under consideration.

- Our students are educated in nuclear engineering, we have a small training reactor at our university, - said Attila Aszedi, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. - There is a very important change in European energy policy, more and more countries are running new nuclear projects, so the exchange of experience related to teaching in this field or conducting research in the field of nuclear safety and energy will be very beneficial for both our universities.

On behalf of the Silesian University of Technology, cooperation agreement was signed by the Rector, Prof. Marek Pawełczyk in the presence of Prof. Anna Chrobok, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education, who visited the University in Budapest.

– After a more detailed analysis of this university, we find it very close to the Silesian University of Technology, hence today’s agreement on cooperation. I think that the next steps, thanks to which this cooperation will develop perfectly, are the contacts of representatives of faculties and research teams - said Prof. Marek Pawełczyk, the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology.
