The Silesian University of Technology among the signatories of the agreement on the organization of EuroScience Open Forum

The Silesian University of Technology - together with six Silesian state universities and representatives of the authorities - signed a cooperation agreement on the joint organization of the EuroScience Open Forum conference, which is to be held in 2024 in Katowice.

In 2024, Katowice will hold the title of the European City of Science.

The signatories of the agreement (signed on September 22nd  this year) were: the president of Katowice, the Silesian voivode, the marshal of the Silesian voivodeship, chairman and vice-chairman of the board of the GZM Metropolis  and rectors of universities associated in the Academic Consortium "Katowice - City of Science": University of Silesia, Silesian University of Technology, Medical University of Silesia, University of Economics in Katowice, J. Kukuczka Academy of Physical Education, Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice and K. Szymanowski Academy of Music.

Representatives of the "Katowice - City of Science" consortium in their speeches emphasized the essence of joint action and the opportunity for the entire region, which is offered by being granted the title of the European City of Science 2024. Matthias Girod, the secretary general of the EuroScience association, also took the floor, stressing that Katowice was the first city in Central and Eastern Europe to receive this prestigious distinction.

During the meeting, the logo of the European City of Science 2024, which was prepared by designers from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, was also presented. The idea of creating a logo to symbolize the members of the consortium was introduced by the Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts, Prof. Dr hab. Grzegorz Hańderek.

The Mayor of Katowice, Dr. Marcin Krupa, presented the rectors of seven universities with letters regarding the commissioning of research as part of the work on the European City of Science 2024 program. The city of Katowice - the consortium's strategic partner - will allocate PLN 100,000 for this purpose to each university. The University of Silesia was commissioned to carry out research and development work aimed at developing a report on the expectations of residents of Katowice towards the assumptions of the European City of Science 2024 in the field of natural sciences.

The decision to award Katowice the title of the European City of Science was made in December 2021, and the official handover took place on July 16th , 2022, in Leiden, in the Netherlands. The institution awarding the title and organizing the ESOF conference is EuroScience (European Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology) cooperating with the European Commission.
