The Science Days of the Silesian University of Technology are under way
Outstanding scientists from Poland and abroad, winners of prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants and researchers with the status of a Highly Cited Researcher (UNHCR) – the Silesian University of Technology Science Days which will last until April the 11th , have begun at the Education and Congress Centre of the Silesian University of Technology.
During a two-day meeting, the latest scientific achievements, innovative technologies, and research potential of the University will be presented. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit key laboratories of the Silesian University of Technology.
The participants in the Education and Congress Centre auditorium were welcomed by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk and Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation Prof. Dr. Hab.Eng. Sebastian Werle.
- “This is the third edition of the Science Days of the Silesian University of Technology, which we implement as part of the program "Initiative of Excellence - Research University". They play a very important role for us because we carry out important scientific research focused on Priority Research Areas. We want to present it to our community and to the world. That is why we invited to the Silesian University of Technology people who are leaders in their research areas and are also known for their publications to our scientists. We want to show them what achievements we have, but we also want to hear from them how they acquire them and how they organize their scientific work. As the hosts of this event, we want to show them the Silesian University of Technology, our laboratories, and also that it is worth cooperating with us.” - explains the Rector Marek Pawełczyk.

The conference was opened by Prof. Luisa F. Cabeza - an outstanding scientist with the current status of Highly Cited Researcher, currently working at the University of Lleida (Universitat de Lleida), where she heads the GReiA research group, which specializes in thermal energy storage and energy efficiency of buildings.
"- When we talk about energy transition, we must not forget the people living in the area where we want to carry it out. It is they who will experience it the most because they may pay a different price for their energy or will have to use it in a different way. So the most important thing is to explain to them why we need it, but also how it will affect them.” - says professor Luisa F. Cabeza, who is recognized as one of the most cited scientists in the field of engineering, and her rich scientific achievements have significantly contributed to the development of the scientific community.

During the two-day event, participants discuss key and most current scientific problems and topics related to sustainable development and improvement of health and life of residents.
Excellent scientists take part in the discussion panels. The first of them, entitled “21st century medicine – the latest generations of technologies in medicine and their impact on diagnostics and planning of therapy”, was attended by, among others, Prof. Paul W. Franks of Lund University in Sweden and Queen Mary University of London in the UK, whose research focuses on using multimodal data and machine learning approaches to improve the prediction, prevention and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases. Prof. Paul W. Franks has published more than 500 peer-reviewed articles (cited more than 80 000 times) and has given more than 300 guest lectures.
-“It is difficult to talk about any technological and social development without taking into account the aspects of sustainable development, circularity, such a good look at what we produce and consume. That is why the main topics of the discussion panels focus on six priority research areas of the Silesian University of Technology, and I am glad that such well-known scientists from all over the world take part in them.” – recalls Vice-Rector Sebastian Werle.
We invite you to participate in the other discussion panels, which will last until April 11 in the Lecture Hall A of the Education and Congress Centre of the Silesian University of Technology. The detailed program is available here: https://www.polsl.pl/dni-nauki/miedzynarodowa-konferencja-priorytetowych-obszarow-badawczych/
The conference is accompanied by very interesting accompanying events. They include presentations of student science clubs and the opportunity to visit modern facilities and key laboratories of the Silesian University of Technology, which will be made available to employees, PhD students, students and invited guests. Among them, the Virtual Flying Laboratory, Nokia and Aptiv Laboratories at the faculties in Gliwice, the Laboratory of Modern Rail Traffic Management Systems at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology in Katowice and laboratories located in the European HealthTech Innovation Centre (EHTIC) in Zabrze. The participants will have a chance to learn about advanced research equipment and its potential applications in ongoing scientific projects.
