The Polish Mining Congress was held in Katowice

It is the most important forum for representatives of science and the mining industry. The 5th  Polish Mining Congress was held in International Congress Centre in Katowice. The event was coordinated by the Silesian University of Technology.

The Polish Mining Congress is a cyclical event organized by three universities, which in their research fields deal with broadly understood mining and the extractive industry. The event is organized alternately by the Silesian University of Technology, the AGH University of Science and Technology and the Wrocław University of Technology. This year the meeting was coordinated by our University.

- “During the debates, all energy, mining and social topics will be discussed” - announced prof. dr hab. Eng. Franciszek Plewa, Dean of the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation.

The Congress was held as part of the International Fair EXPO KATOWICE - the Fair of Mining, Power Industry and Metallurgy. As dr hab. Eng. Marcin Lutyński, prof. of Silesian University of Technology said, the organizers of the Congress decided to cooperate with the fair in order to reach a wider audience.

- “We thought that the organization of the Congress together with such a large event would be beneficial for us and would allow the Congress to have a greater impact on this environment, which could potentially be interested in this subject “- added the scientist.

This year's Congress was attended by over 200 people - scientists and representatives of the mining industry. The event was held for the fifth time, this year after a two-year pandemic break.

- “A lot has changed during this time. If we had met two years ago, the atmosphere in terms of the mining industry would probably have been a bit worse. However, today we can see that the economy does not function well without its participation” - said dr Eng. Marcin Lutyński, prof. of Silesian University of Technology

The guest of the congress was Piotr Pyzik, undersecretary of state, government plenipotentiary for the transformation of energy companies and coal mining. – “We want to develop the mining industry in every respect. (...) There is a war in the East, it is not known how long it will last and it is not known what its effects will be. It has already destabilized the issue of access to sources and drastically changed the routes of supplying raw materials not only to our country. Until these two issues stabilize, market prices will continue to be speculative. Therefore, it is in our interest to stabilize these two factors in the geopolitical system”- said the deputy minister.

Zygmunt Łukaszczyk, prof. of Silesian University of Technology emphasized that what is happening behind the eastern border is part of the key challenge of the 21st century, which is the climate and energy crisis. –“ Nobody should have any doubts that independence from fossil fuels from the East should be called either the raison d'état or the energy strategy of Poland and Europe” - stated dr  Zygmunt Łukaszczyk.

The Polish Mining Congress was held as part of the International Fair EXPO KATOWICE. Exhibitors from the mining, energy and metallurgical industries present at the fair. During the event, there were also conferences, discussions and demonstrations of industry equipment.
