The players of AZS Silesian University of Technology are back in the game
This weekend the team of AZS Silesian University of Technology will start their second season in the second basketball league. Their first rivals on Saturday the 5th of October in the away meeting will be the Mountain Resorts Spartacus Jelenia Góra.
Last year, in their debut season, the basketball players of our University took seventh place in the second league.
- The whole team deserves a great distinction - explained coach Patryk Niczke after the previous season. “Girls have always shown their hearts, always fought and, in addition, they were able to do it in an organized way, with discipline, consistency and despite sometimes very difficult moments, they were able to win.”
The team, whose coach is Patryk Niczke, will start the season with new hopes, in a renovated sports hall. The OSIR facility at Akademicka 26 Street in Gliwice is currently being refreshed – the hall is being painted and changing rooms are being renovated.
Originally, it was at home that basketball players were supposed to inaugurate the season on September 28 with a match against MKS MOS Betard Wrocław, but due to renovation it was postponed. Just like the meeting of the third round with MUKS Chrobry Basket Głuchołazy – this time unfortunately due to the flood that affected this city.

The AZS Silesian University of Technology team started preparations for the new season on August 23rd . Currently, the team consists of thirteen players. What are the expectations of the coach?
- “So far they are not exorbitant” - says Patryk Niczke. “From the perspective of all the ‘adventures’ that have already touched us since August and still affect us in the cycle of preparation for the new season, they cannot even be like that. For now, we just want to start this season. Currently, our most urgent need is to return to normal training in our own facility and the opportunity to focus all attention on the training work. We would also be happy to invite new partners who will seriously see the opportunity of their own promotion through cooperation with our team and the Silesian University of Technology.”
Eleven teams applied for this year’s second-league competition, including debuting teams from Ruda Śląska and Ziębice.
- “The league is bigger this year, we have far-reaching trips ahead of us – Jelenia Góra, Wrocław, Siechnice, Ziębice, Głuchołazy” – explains the coach.” It will also be more diverse in terms of the sports level of individual teams. Some people think about the promotion to the first league, others will “just play young people.” We want to find our place somewhere in the middle. Better than last season, but still “not crazy.” It will not be easy, because everyone around us has been armed - unfortunately also at our expense. But we are a little stronger than we were a year ago. Slowly, in small steps, we will build a stronger team. We also hope that talented really valuable players will increasingly choose studies at the Silesian University of Technology and will join our team both in league competitions and in academic arenas”.
Until the work in the OSiR hall is completed, our team will play their games away. We will inform you about the first meeting that will be held in Gliwice.
