The new racing car of the Silesian University of Technology

The new SW-05e racing car which was developed by 84 students and trainees working in 7 technical and 2 marketing sub-teams was presented at the Silesian University of Technology. The design work lasted a year.

The SW-05e bolide - is the third electric vehicle constructed by the POLSL Racing Student Science Club operating at the Silesian University of Technology. The Club is made up of students from various faculties. The latest project is packed with modern solutions.

– SW-05e was designed with simplicity of components and integration of advanced systems in mind. In the 2024 season, our vehicle will take part in the Formula Student competition, starting in FS Czech and FS Italy. These international competitions are an excellent opportunity to present innovative solutions and skills of our construction team - said the new leader of SKN PolSl Racing, Eng. Cezary Pradela.

Scientific supervisor of SKN PolSl Racing, Dr Eng. Mirosław Szczepanik, Prof. SUT admits that students' skills and commitment are worth appreciating.

- Bolid Formula Student is a kind of student laboratory of innovative technical solutions, the latest methods, technologies and materials in line with the trends of today's automotive industry. Thanks to this type of projects, students have the opportunity not only to pursue their passions and interests, but also to apply the knowledge acquired during their studies in practice. The vehicles they create are interdisciplinary projects requiring cooperation between engineers from various fields of technology - explains the supervisor.

Students make decisions together about solutions that are implemented in vehicles. They continue to optimize them to obtain a vehicle with the expected driving parameters, while achieving the lowest possible weight and the best traction, grip and acceleration. In order to achieve these assumptions, students use modern software, optimization methods, perform complex numerical analyses and real tests. This leads to obtaining the appropriate aerodynamics of the vehicle while maximizing the ratio of downforce to the drag force of the air flowing around the vehicle.

- They introduce the proposed composite material solutions, use 3D printing technology, and perform complex strength analyses of vehicle components. They introduce their own solutions in the field of energy storage systems, traction control, and telemetry systems that allow tracking the operating parameters of individual vehicle components in real time and making immediate decisions - enumerates Prof. Szczepanik.

All this makes the Formula Student car similar to Formula 1 cars and the work of the PolSl Racing Team similar to the work of Formula 1 teams.

However, this would not be possible without the appropriate resources and support of the authorities of the Silesian University of Technology and sponsors, for which the team members are very grateful.
