There were wishes, a jubilee cake and dancing until morning. The 80th anniversary Jubilee Ball of the Silesian University of Technology is behind us. 500 people took part in the ceremonial event – students, PhD students, scientists, and employees of the Silesian University of Technology.
Balls of the Silesian University of Technology are already a tradition, but this year the event was unique, because it was the 80th anniversary of the University. The jubilee ball was attended not only by the academic community, but also by distinguished guests, who were personally welcomed by the host of the event at the Gliwice Arena by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Marek Pawełczyk.
- We have a great opportunity to celebrate. Everyone wishes us more good years for the Silesian University of Technology. I am confident that these next 20 years, up to a hundred, will be a fruitful time for us. We have already developed an excellent form of cooperation with both students and doctoral students as well as employees, whom we include in the implementation of joint projects. We have the courage to reach for bold goals and investments that affect development – said the Rector. Today we want to celebrate in a good atmosphere and celebrate the friendships that have been formed here over the years We wish the Silesian University of Technology to be a dream place for us to work and spend time – he added.

Guests joined the wishes. Among them was the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, prof Marek Gzik.
We can be proud of our University. The achievements of the Silesian University of Technology indicate that it is one of the best universities in Poland. It belongs to the group of 10 Universities in the Excellence Initiative– a Research University program. I wish this good series of events would last – Prof. Gzik congratulated the guests gathered at the ceremony.
Wishes also flowed from the Partners of the 80th anniversary of the Silesian University of Technology: The Upper Silesian Aviation Society, the Katowice Special Economic Zone, the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis and the cities of Katowice and Gliwice.
The President of Gliwice Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Budka, who took part in the Ball with her husband, the MEP Boris Budka, wished the Silesian University of Technology the next years of fruitful cooperation.
- When the Silesian University of Technology celebrates, Gliwice also celebrates. Every time I think of Gliwice, I think of the Silesian University of Technology and vice versa. I wish the honourable Jubilate that we continue to work well together. Since I am the president of Gliwice, we have already managed to undertake several joint projects, and I hope that this is not the end – said Kuczyńska-Budka.

The value of cooperation with the scientific community was also discussed by the President of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis Kazimierz Karolczak.
Science will give us the future, so we must support it. The whole region has developed thanks to industry, and this one was created thanks to science. We are aware of this and want to continue supporting science, and especially Silesian University of Technology, which is one of the most important universities in the region and in Poland – said Karolczak. “I wish the students to be proud of the diploma they receive at the Silesian University of Technology, because thanks to it they will be able to make a real difference in life in the region,” he added.
The 80th anniversary was also an occasion for memories. At the beginning of the ceremony, guests could see archival photos and listen to the history of the Silesian University of Technology in a nutshell. The participants of the ball had tears in their eyes, and in the corridors, they shared memories.
After the solemn toast and wishes, all the guests danced a traditional polish dance - a polonaise. The procession of dancers was led by the representation of the Academic Dance Ensemble "Dąbrowiacy". The dance continued until the morning. In the meantime, the participants ate a jubilee cake, listened to a violin concert, and took part in quizzes.

Silesian University of Technology is my love. Here I studied, did habilitation and professorship. I do not regret a single day spent at the university – said Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Sebastian Werle, Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation of the Silesian University of Technology.
Among the scientists of the Silesian University of Technology and the authorities, a large group has been associated with the University of Technology since the time of their studies.
“I came to the University full of fears, but I quickly found friends and many development opportunities here and it continues to this day. I wish our students to use their opportunities and strengthen their competences at the Silesian University of Technology, so that in the future they will be unrivalled on the labour market – said Prof.Dr Hab. Eng. Anna Chrobok , Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education at the Silesian University of Technology.
Students and PhD students were enjoying the ball right next to their lecturers. The jubilee ball of the Silesian University of Technology, full of memories and good fun, has already gone down in history, but it does not end the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the university.
