The gifts for the Hospice of Divine Mercy in Gliwice

For the fourth time, the Volunteer Center of the Silesian University of Technology organized a collection of donations for the benefit of the Divine Mercy Hospice in Gliwice. The collected gifts were sent to the Hospice on December 11th, 2025. These were not only the dressing and hygiene products needed on a daily basis, but also small gifts.

- As every year, the staff of our University, the entire academic community, were eagerly involved in the collection. Starting this action, we ask individual faculties and units to join us and support us in the collection. The Volunteer Centre later collects all the gifts in one place and brings them to the hospice – says Barbara Odoszewska from the Volunteer Centre of the Silesian University of Technology. – This year, in addition to the necessary personal hygiene or dressing measures, we have prepared small gifts for hospice patients – she adds.

The collection at the Silesian University of Technology took place for the fifth time.

- This is another year in which we receive support from your University staff. It is very important for us - says Małgorzata Szymczyk, President of the Association of Friends of the Sick Hospice in Gliwice.  Every support is of great importance. Please remember that our patients are at the end of their journey, often feeling excluded by society and sometimes even by health care. By giving them the collected gifts, we give them hope and joy that someone else remembers them – emphasizes President Szymczyk.

- When we bring the packages with gifts  to our patients, they are very surprised at the beginning, and then we see emotional tears, - said Izabela Żukowska, a nurse in the palliative care home team who takes care of patients in their homes. - Patients enjoy the smallest gift, - she adds.

Currently, more than 200 patients are under the care of the Gliwice hospice in both stationary and home care.

- In both cases, the scope of care is the same, because palliative medicine is mainly concerned with relieving the symptoms of the disease in different ways. In stationary conditions, we do it on the spot, having the patient under the care of a doctor 24 hours a day. Whereas nurses, physiotherapists, or medical carers, with the support of the family, take care of patients in home care, of course, a doctor is also available in emergency situations – emphasizes Małgorzata Szymczyk, President of the Association of Friends of the Sick Hospice in Gliwice.

The hospice needs are enormous. Not only medicines, dressing measures are necessary, but also funds. For more information about the Hospice of Divine Mercy in Gliwice go to the website: https://hospicjum.gliwice.pl/.
