The first electric car of the PolSl Racing Science Club

On November 15th, students of the PolSl Racing Science Club presented their first Formula Student class electric car.

The electric car called SW-03e is the result of development work on their previous combustion car, which was internationally successful many times. In addition to a completely new power source, changes include the construction of the frame, suspension and aerodynamic package. The vehicle has been designed to participate in competitions on racing tracks.

- This vehicle is unique due to the fact that it concerns very modern engineering solutions. The students used many innovative solutions, for example dispersion composite materials, ultra -light fiber sheathing, the vehicle's aerodynamics were simulated in professional software. In addition, traction control systems, control systems, security systems, a new energy storage system are used. It can be said that the vehicle is packed with many modern solutions - said the scientific supervisor, Dr. Eng. Mirosław Szczepanik, prof. of SUT.

He added that it is a low-budget vehicle, its price is around 200,000. zloty.

According to team leader Ewa Kocyan, the biggest challenge was the actual transplantation of the electric motor in place of the internal combustion engine. - It is not like one engine will be pulled out and the other one will be put in its place - said a fifth-year student of mechanical engineering.

Most of the elements of the vehicle are original projects and solutions of students from PolSl Racing. – It is primarily its own energy storage system, i.e. the battery itself. We use purchased commercial engines, but the battery is our own design, as well as the entire skin and the entire aerodynamic package, which looks very nice - added the leader.

Currently, students from PolSl Racing focus mainly on the development of electric vehicles. Ewa Kocyan admitted that switching to an electric car result from, among others, of the current automotive trends that focus on electromobility. - Besides, competitions with internal combustion vehicles are slowly being phased out in Formula Student competitions. At the same time, of course, we will continue to develop our internal combustion vehicle, because we prototype and test all mechanical things on it first. Our first electric motorcycle, which allows us to test single modules and various battery monitoring systems, also gives us great opportunities for the development of electronics - added Ewa Kocyan.

Former team leader Damian Pietryja recalled that work on the electric car project lasted over 1.5 years, and about forty students worked on it. – The reason the project was so long because we set ourselves high expectations. Most Formula Student teams around the world, when building their first electric car, use only one engine, they have a battery purchased from an external company. We wanted to go a step further and do it ourselves. After all, we did not come to college to copy solutions from other companies, but to do something ourselves, together with their support, help and mentoring, gaining experience, skills and knowledge - emphasized Damian Pietryja.

The electric car has already made its debut. This year, the team presented itself at the Formula Student competition in Croatia, where it was appreciated for innovation and the level of complexity of the project. Now the students have a plan for further work to improve the vehicle and to prepare for the next season of competition.

Dr hab. Eng. Mirosław Szczepanik, prof. SUT has been the supervisor of the PolSl Racing Scientific Circle for ten years. He admitted that he is most proud of the atmosphere in the team and the fact that students successfully pursue their passions with him. - Activity in our club transforms students into engineers of the future, who come from our great University, from the Silesian University of Technology and are in demand on the labour market. Some decided to continue their research in the form of implementation doctorates, which I am also very happy about - summed up Mirosław Szczepanik.

PolSl Racing is a team of automotive enthusiasts, consisting of forty-five members, studying at six faculties of the Silesian University of Technology. The team has had many successes, including at the Formula Student competition.
