The 2nd National Scientific Conference “MoleCon” is behind us
On the 19th of May, the 2nd National Scientific Conference “MoleCon” took place at the Educational and Congress Centre of the Silesian University of Technology. This year’s edition met with great interest – as many as 73 participants applied for the poster session.
Poster sessions, lectures, presentations, participants from all over Poland – many students decided to participate in “MoleCon.” The official opening of event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Wojciech Simka.
- We host not only people from our Faculty, but also participants from Poznań, Krakow and Zabrze, among others. All over the country, but also abroad, there are conferences organized by Student Research Groups, which is why I am glad that also the Student Research Group of Chemists decided to take up this challenge. This is the second edition of the conference, and I hope that it will continue in the coming years. The number of participants is a great success of this event – explains Dean Wojciech Simka.
The conference began with the inaugural lecture “Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reactions in synthesis of nitrogen heterocyclic conjugates,” which was presented by Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Agnieszka KUDELKO from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology. The participants also had the opportunity to listen to a lecture on corrosion of guitar strings by Dr Eng. Maciej Sowa and M.Sc. Eng. Aleksander Olesiński.
The most important thing for them, however, was the opportunity to try their hand at oral presentations, as well as participate in a poster session, during which they could present the results of their engineering and master’s works.
- We are presenting a new way of creating drugs to make them more selective than cancer cells. We are talking about glycoconjugation – it is combining our active compound with sugar, which can increase transport to cancer cells – says Karolina Hanzlik from the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology, who together with Mirosław Cieślik presented the poster “Glycoconjugation as a way to modify the properties of bioactive compounds in the context of anticancer therapy”.
Students and organizers emphasized how important it is for them to be able to participate in such conferences.
- This is a good way to present our work. The event gives a great opportunity to discuss with students also from other Universities, talk about the results of their research, but also look for inspiration – explains Mirosław Cieślik.
- I would like to thank everyone who participated in the event. It was a small celebration of science and chemistry for us, as well as a time and an opportunity to talk and exchange observations together – says the Chairman of the Student Self-Government of the Faculty of Chemistry, Eng. Philip Wojtas.
