The 17th Researchers’ Night of the Silesian University of Technology - "In the rhythm of eco"
Over 180 activities in 4 cities - this is what the 17th edition of Researchers’ Night of the Silesian University of Technology under the slogan: “In the rhythm of eco” prepared for its participants. On Saturday, October 8th, from afternoon till night, the event participants will enjoy lectures, shows, workshops, exhibitions, concerts and a scientific talk shows. Some activities will be broadcast live on the internet.
AFTER THE CONFERENCE
- “It is already the 17th edition of the Researchers’ Night - this year under the slogan "In the rhythm of eco". We would like to invite you to this great popular science event, during which we open all scientific doors at the Silesian University of Technology to show what best we have. We have prepared 180 fantastic shows, not only scientific, but also cultural. We will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the University of the Third Age in Gliwice. So this year there will be attractions for both the youngest and the oldest “- said Dr. Aleksandra Ziembińska-Buczyńska, prof. of SUT, director of the Science Popularization Centre of the Silesian University of Technology (the unit organizing the Scientists' Night).
- “The Silesian University of Technology responds very intensively to the needs of the socio-economic environment - hence this year's slogan. Green energy or ecological behaviour are very important, which is why we decided to focus on this topic this year. We will certainly talk a lot about electromobility, alternative energy sources and the circular economy. The program also includes a "byte zone" and a fantastic talk-show with our scientists, under the slogan "eco-rumours" - indicated director Ziembińska-Buczyńska.
Dr hab. Eng. Tomasz Trawiński, prof. of SUT, Vice-Rector for Infrastructure and Promotion of the Silesian University of Technology emphasized that the Researchers’ Night is a very interesting project, which met with great interest of scientists themselves. – “Spreading knowledge and sharing it only through lectures or classes with students is sometimes insufficient from the perspective of a scientist. Therefore, the Researchers' Night is a great opportunity to talk about various phenomena, complex mathematical, physical and chemical problems - in an accessible way” - he said.
The President of Gliwice, Mr. Adam Neumann, emphasized the importance of supporting science by referring to contemporary problems in the world. – “Today's world is facing great challenges related to the energy crisis and the financial crisis, which is why modern solutions are so important that will allow us to survive these difficult times” - he said.
Grzegorz Kwitek, a representative of the Metropolitan Area of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie, emphasized that since its inception, the metropolis has been actively cooperating with the academic community and supporting science, among others. through the Metropolitan Science Support Fund. – “Its aim is to invite scientists from world universities to cooperate with universities in our region, to conduct lectures and work with students here” - he said. Grzegorz Kwitek added that such events as the Researchers' Night are very valuable, especially for young people, because they can see how science influences their everyday life.
The guest of the conference was also Artur Pollak - president of APA Group. – “The great value of the Researchers' Night is the opportunity to talk freely with people to whom we do not have access on a daily basis, because they work in laboratories, go to conferences, share their knowledge somewhere in the world. Here, all these scientists are available to us” - said Artur Pollak.
In addition, the conference was also attended by scientists from the Silesian University of Technology, who are involved in the promotion of science and will take part in the Researchers' Night. They were:
- Dr Eng. Edyta Łaskawiec (Faculty of Environmental and Power Engineering), who talked about whether it is possible for the wastewater to be so clean that we cannot distinguish it from drinking water
- Dr Eng. Arch. Magdalena Krause-Świerczyńska and Eng. Arch. Jakub Bródka (Faculty of Architecture), who talked about ecological architecture and how to build ecologically and green
- Dr Eng. Paweł Fabiś (Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering), who talked about electromobility and the conversion of combustion vehicles into electric ones.
- Dr Eng. Wojciech Filipowski (Faculty of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computer Science), who talked about obtaining energy from the sun and how to assess the efficiency of a photovoltaic cell.
ABOUT THE NIGHT OF RESEARCHERS
This year, the Researchers’ Night will take place in four cities where the Silesian University of Technology units are located: in Gliwice, Zabrze, Katowice and Rybnik. The event will begin at 3.00 pm and will last until 10.00 pm. This year's slogan - "In the rhythm of eco" - is meant to draw attention to ecological issues, including electromobility, environmental protection, eco-construction or ecology in architecture.
Among the many proposals and topics, there are such as: “Fantastic world of microorganisms", "Become a pilot of an unmanned aerial vehicle", "Space in our hands", "Chemical explosion of colours", "Astronaut test", "Biblosphere for the little ones, or fairy tales in the kids’ zone".
Science enthusiasts will also learn, among others
- how the processor works, or what the hacker knows.
- how a skyscraper survives an earthquake.
- what wealth is contained in kitchen waste.
- how robots see our world.
- why methane is always dangerous;
- why microplastic is a macro problem;
- how viscosity affects movement;
- whether artificial intelligence can falsify images;
- how to make homemade pH indicators;
- how fatigue affects manual and intellectual dexterity;
- what can be seen during laparoscopy;
- how people have been poisoned over the years;
- how to control the drone;
- how to build a rover from Lego bricks.
There will also be cultural activities, including a concert by the Academic Choir of the Silesian University of Technology and a dance party with the Academic Dance Group "Dąbrowiacy".
