Talks at Ministry of Education and Science on the creation of the National Centre for RES Research and Implementation

On August 30, 2022, in Warsaw, representatives of Polish science institutions at a meeting with the Minister of Education and Science Przemysław Czarnek talked about the creation of the National Centre for Research and Implementation of Renewable Energy (PolRES Living Lab). The centre is a unique concept consisting in the construction of local, innovative demonstration installations in the field of renewable energy sources.

As part of the PolRES Living Lab, it is planned to establish a Scientific Centre, and the participation in it was declared by:

  • IMP PAN KEZO in Jabłonna
  • AGH Centre of Energy
  • Silesian University of Technology, Faculty of Environmental and Power Engineering in Gliwice
  • University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn
  • Institute of Power Engineering in Warsaw

In the meeting with the Minister, the Silesian University of Technology was represented by the Rector prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk and vice-rector for cooperation with the socio-economic environment, prof. Janusz Kotowicz. On the government side, the talks were also attended by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Climate and Environment, Ireneusz Zyska, and representatives of Polish science institutions interested in the initiative: prof. IMP PAN, prof. Marcin Lackowski Director of the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences, prof. IMP PAN Grzegorz Żywica Deputy Director for Research of IMP PAN, prof.  Wojciech Nowak, Director of the AGH UST Energy Centre, prof. Tomasz Gałka Director of the Institute of Power Engineering as well as prof. Jan Przyborowski - Rector of the University of Warmia and Mazury.

The establishment of the National Centre for Renewable Energy Research and Implementation will allow the integration of renewable energy infrastructure, eco-energy, hydrogen technologies and the renewable energy sector, especially offshore elevators, which are the subject of research by several leading scientific and industrial centres in the country.

The Silesian University of Technology, as a scientific partner as part of the centre’s work, offers, among other things, the possibility of conducting research related to the development of hydrogen production technology and the production of methanol based on hydrogen from RES, the use of hydrogen in steam and gas installations, the development of models and forecasts related to the country's energy security, storage energy using hydrogen. Professor Janusz Kotowicz had been running consultations on this topic for several months.

The topic of renewable energy sources (RES) is one of the important elements of Poland's energy policy implemented, inter alia, in the context of the National Reconstruction Plan and the implementation of the European Green Deal in Poland. Activities for the use of national natural resources and scientific and research potential, including cooperation between science and industry and the development of innovation, are a step towards Poland's energy independence.
