Take part in the EEPF26 Conference!
We invite you to participate in the conference "Ethical Engineering for a Successful Future (EEPF26): Strategies for the Sustainable Development of Raw Materials”, which will take place on September 8th -10th at the Technical University of Bergakademie in Freiberg.
Secure and sustainable supplies of critical raw materials are key to economic stability, technological sovereignty, and ecological transformation. Without a reliable resource base, it is impossible to implement key technologies such as electromobility, renewable energy and digitalization. In the face of geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions and growing resource scarcity, local, responsible raw material production has become more important than ever.
At the same time, resource extraction projects often face public opposition – from environmental concerns and local resistance to issues of social justice and participation. These challenges not only complicate project implementation but also undermine trust between industry, policymakers, and society. Social acceptance has therefore become a decisive factor in the success of sustainable raw material strategies.
This conference will bring together scientists, industry representatives, public services, and other interested parties for an open dialogue. We will explore how responsible resource exploitation can align with social values and community expectations. The aim is to develop common perspectives and strategies based on scientific evidence for socially responsible and publicly acceptable resource extraction.
The organizers emphasize that over the last 3 years, together with EURECA-PRO partners and other European partners, they have created an intensive doctoral training program on the topic of "Social License to Operate" within EIT RawMaterials. They are now sharing all the project results at an exciting conference that will feature a range of practical case studies from the mining industry, scientific insights, and contributions from human rights experts, representatives of civil society, including local communities, and regulatory bodies.
