SuSDay - Sustainable Development Day at the Silesian University of Technology

Lectures, workshops, competitions, and presentations – SuSDay – Sustainable Development Day took place in the Student Creativity Centre. ORLEN was the partner of the event.

SuSDay was an opportunity to introduce students to the principles of seventeen Sustainable Development Goals and related activities, as well as to talk with experts about the future and "green" solutions. The event was addressed mainly to students and doctoral students, but anyone interested in this subject could come.

- We wanted to introduce the issues of implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, show what has already been implemented and what challenges await us - said Prof. Anna Chrobok - the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education.

- I would like to remind you that this academic year, the Silesian University of Technology launched a new field of studies called “Sustainable Consumption and Production,” which refers to the 12th Sustainable Development Goal.  This is the first interdisciplinary field of study in Poland, which combines issues at the intersection of ecology, economics, technology, and social sciences. It is a response to global challenges related to climate change and the need for energy transformation – adds the Vice-Rector.

During the Sustainable Development Day there were lectures, competitions, and PBL workshops.

-  The mentoring session of experts from ORLEN in our PBL projects was an important part of the event. During the workshops, they supported students with practical knowledge in the field of sustainable development – noted Prof. Anna Chrobok.

ORLEN was a partner of the event.

- Our company is happy to take part in such events, especially at the Silesian University of Technology, because here we have a field of study – “Sustainable Consumption and Production” that remains under our patronage. We want to share our knowledge, rich experience, but at the same time create a certain platform, a forge of human resources and talents, which in the future will implement various types of sustainable, circular or transformational projects – such as those that ORLEN S.A. promotes and runs at home – says Bartłomiej Samardakiewicz, Head of the Department of Coordination and implementation of Recycling Projects at ORLEN.

As the expert emphasizes, cooperation between the University and industry is of a mutual benefit.

- Companies and industry benefit from creative thought, creativity or research and ideas of scientists, which can then be implemented and transformed into modern technologies and products. So, the cooperation between science and industry is absolutely crucial, and that’s where it all starts, - he adds.

For students participating in the event, it was an opportunity to gain valuable experience under the supervision of experts from ORLEN.

- For engineers, the issues raised during SuSDay are extremely important. Sustainable development, ecology, damage reduction, waste and “zero-emission” are topics that are gaining in importance year by year. All the more so for us, for chemical technologists, due to the fact that we will be dealing with these problems in a few years’ time, as we enter the labour market – said Mateusz Pilszak, a student of chemical technology at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology.

During the Sustainable Development Day there were also competitions and a screening of the film “Sustainable Development in ORLEN.”

THANKS

We would like to thank ORLEN for its participation in the SuSDay – Sustainable Development Day event, for their substantive support and participation of the company’s experts in the workshops for students. Cooperation with ORLEN and its employees is extremely valuable for the Silesian University of Technology. It allows for the exchange of experience and knowledge and for our students it is an opportunity to get to know the practical side of knowledge.
