Success of a student of the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology

Eng. Arch. Jakub Ciszewski, a student of the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology, achieved great success and received a distinction in the international architectural competition "The Home of Shadows".

“The Home of Shadows" is a competition organized by the Buildner platform. The jury included representatives of world-class architectural offices, including Blake T. Smith from BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group. The task for the participants was to design a house for a couple, completely excluding the use of artificial lighting in the living space.

- Such requirements obliged the designers to conduct a thorough analysis and a creative approach to design using natural light as a key factor shaping the functionality, aesthetics and emotional dimension of the interior. The organizers gave the participants complete freedom in choosing the location of their projects and their scale, says Jakub Ciszewski.

The work of a student of our University includes a conceptual design of a single-family house located in the Portuguese town of Monsanto - a village with a unique character, whose buildings have been harmoniously incorporated into the natural, rocky terrain.

- The unique location of the settlement, at the foot of a mountain range and among monumental boulders, provides an inspiring context for considering light as an important architectural material - he explains. - The project is a response to the challenges related to the demanding topography, solar exposure and the need to respect the historic structure of the site. The main goal of the work is not only to analyse and understand the role of light in the design process, but also to consciously use its potential as a tool for architectural narrative - creating a space that pulsates with the rhythm of the day, changes with the movement of the sun and engages the user in a subtle game of sensory perception.

The competition project submitted by Jakub Ciszewski is part of the issues addressed in his master's thesis, supervised by Dr. Eng. Arch. Jan Kubec.

- I am currently continuing to work on the project as part of the preparations for my thesis defence scheduled for May this year – says Jakub Ciszewski. – I have already taken part in many architectural competitions. Apart from architecture, I also work professionally with 3D graphics and freehand drawing. I have designed both small single-family houses and large public buildings. However, architecture has always meant more to me than just designing buildings. It is a discipline that continually fuels my creativity and challenges me to keep pace with the constantly evolving world around me.
