Student of the Silesian University of Technology in the Polish National Team during the World Gliding Championships

Miłosz Gondek, a third-year student of Air Navigation at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology, will represent Poland during the FAI 2021 World Gliding Championships in Glider Aerobatics, which takes place in Leszno.

The 11th World Gliding Acrobatic Championships will last from 28 July to 7 August. The competition takes place at the airport in Leszno. The competition includes two competition categories:

- Unlimited Glider (UG) - 23rd FAI World Gliding Championships

- Advanced Glider (AG) - 11th FAI World Championship for Advanced Gliders.

A student of the Silesian University of Technology will start in the Advanced class. There will be 24 competitors, not only from Poland, but also from Italy, Russia, Austria, Romania, the Czech Republic and France. There are up to 6 competitions ahead of the participants, but their exact number is closely related to the weather conditions at the airport. The first competition will be the so called bunting, which our student arranged from 5 obligatory figures. In the following days the competitors will compete in the following programmes: free, unknown and unknown free.

All programmes must be performer in the air, in an invisible cube of 1000 x 1000 x 1000m. The cube is 200 metres above the ground. Any crossing of its limits is a penalty point imposed on the competitor.

- During the competition we expect high temperatures, which unfortunately are not favourable for aerobatics. Man exposed to sunlight immediately has a worse performance, we become less accurate, and figures are performed with less precision, which can be seen later in the results. An additional difficulty can be thermals, a phenomenon which for cruising gliders is something decent, for us acrobats it is something that bothers, sometimes a lot. Another aspect is stress - something that cannot be predicted. This will be my first competition at such a high level as the World Championships. I hope the stress will not interfere with my competition plans, and that I will give it my all and be able to completely switch off during the flight," says Miłosz Gondek.

A student of the Silesian University of Technology, began his interest in aviation at an early age. He started his glider course at the age of 15, got his SPL licence at the age of 18 and a year later also got his PPL(A) licence. In February this year he was called up to the National Team.

- The support of the Silesian University of Technology and the Aeroclub of the Lubuskie Region enabled me to take part in the highest ranked event, i.e. the World Championships. Thank you for your faith and help," says Miłosz Gondek.

Miłosz studies Air Navigation at the Faculty of Transport and Aviation Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology. During the competition, he will also represent the Aeroclub of the Lubuskie Region.

- Soon, I will start my internship at the Academic Aviation Training Centre of the Silesian University of Technology. More precisely, it will be a practical training for an airline licence ATPL (A).

The university is equipped with new AT3 aircraft, a new training base and experienced instructors. Everything you need to become a full-time professional pilot," adds Miłosz Gondek.

Congratulations and good luck!
