Student of the Silesian University of Technology awarded in "Hospice - Home for terminally ill" competition
Artur Gała, a student of the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology, received the BB Student Award in the competition "Hospice - Home for terminally ill". The competition was organised by the Bee Breeders platform and its aim was to develop a concept that would be innovative in the field of healthcare design.
"The participants had an opportunity to experiment with architecture as a tool to help people suffering from illnesses and to demonstrate how architecture can bring them psychological relief. The idea was to create a place where terminally ill people could find comfort, get better and receive support in any form" says Artur Gała, the author of the winning project.
The aim of the project was to focus on the patient who may receive psychological help and support in a hospice at the end of their life.
"Mental health deterioration can progress rapidly for patients who live in concrete cities far from nature. The building was therefore designed according to the principles of biophilic design, i.e. connecting people with nature. The main block containing the hospice rooms is enclosed in a glass structure that guarantees acoustic comfort and the possibility of communing with nature all year round regardless of the weather. The interiors are dominated by natural materials which, together with a large number of plants, bring the users of the building closer to the nature" adds the student.
On the ground and first floor there are therapy rooms, nurses' rooms, a chapel and a meeting room. On the second floor there is a garden. Another level is dedicated to the library and the guest rooms. On the top floor there is a kitchen with a dining room, a social area and a vegetable garden.
For our student, the biggest challenge in the competition was working on a very sensitive subject matter, requiring understanding and a careful approach.
"I decided to take part in this competition because none of my previous projects had dealt with such a serious subject. I wanted to test my creativity in such a sensitive and difficult issue" says Artur Gała.
This is not the first project of our student that was appreciated in an international competition. Earlier, he received an honourable mention in the Hills of the Arts competition organised by the Young Architects Competitions platform.
Artur Gała is currently a 5th year student at the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology. Apart from architecture, he is interested in all kinds of technological innovations and electromobility.
Congratulations!
