Storage of hydrogen in disused mines. The Silesian University of Technology coordinates an international project
The Silesian University of Technology coordinates the international HyFlexMine project, which aims to develop a safe and flexible hydrogen storage system in closed underground mines. The project plans to use modular sets of commercially available high-pressure tanks, which will be placed in appropriately adapted excavations.
The project includes both preparation of the warehouse concept and adaptation of the post-mining infrastructure. The work will include geomechanical and thermo-mechanical analyses, leakage monitoring, and leakage prevention activities. The consortium will also deal with emergency ventilation and economic and environmental evaluation of the proposed solution.
The consortium consists of Silesian University of Technology, Central Mining Institute – PIB, AGH University of Science and Technology, GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences from Germany, Gaznet Industrial OÜ from Estonia, and Università degli Studi di Brescia (University of Brescia) from Italy.
Silesian University of Technology is the initiator and coordinator of the project and participates in all working packages. The University is responsible, among others, for project management, execution of multi-criteria analysis of potential locations, communication of results and preparation of the solution implementation map.
HyFlexMine project is implemented from the 1st September 2026 to 31st August 2029. The project is co-financed by the European Union under the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, Grant Agreement No. 101296205. The total cost of the project is EUR 2 499 712.45 and the funding from the Research Fund for Coal and Steel is EUR 1 499 827.47.
