		Silesian University of Technology with awards at the Silesian Academic Sport Gala
The Silesian University of Technology has again won the most important awards at the 15th Silesian Academic Sport Gala, which took place in the theatre and cinema hall of the Youth Palace in Katowice. The cups for the victory in the general and medal classification in the Silesian Academic Championships were received by the Vice-Rector for General Affairs Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Bożena Skołud and the director of the Sports Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Krzysztof Czapla.
For the twelfth time in a row, the Silesian University of Technology has been the winner of the general classification of the cycle of the Silesian Academic Championships. Our students won this season 16 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 5 bronze medals, which made them the best also in the medal classification.
In the twenty-first century, the Silesian University of Technology did not take the first place in the general classification of the AMŚ (Silesian Academic Championships) only three times; it was also recognized as the most successful in the 50-year history of the Silesian Academic Championships.
- We are very proud to have so many talented athletes. Young people are not evaluated by means of sports activities – they are encouraged to do sports, and the large number of sections makes it possible for everyone to train what they like. We focus on the sports for the entire student group. Thanks to this, there are many people willing, and teachers from the Sports Centre are perfectly able to find the most talented pearls that can develop even more. And they do it while studying – says the Vice-Rector Bożena Skolud.
 
		Athletes in the colours of the Silesian University of Technology in the final classifications of individual disciplines stood on the podium in as many as 34 starts out of 46. In the general classification – taking into account the score for all final results – our University, as in previous years, overtook the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Medical University of Silesia, scoring a total of 772 points. It is worth adding that Silesian University of Technology together with the Silesian Medical University, were the only ones to present representatives in all 46 disciplines.
Vice-Rector Bożena Skołud and Prof. Krzysztof Czapla received the awards in the company of Piotr Wysocki, Deputy Director for Organization and Sports at the Sports Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, as well as students of the Silesian University of Technology nominated in the category of “Sports Success” – the vice-champion of Europe in sailing in the Finn class - Michał Gonciarz and Małgorzata Włodarczyk, who performed well in the Academic Championships of Poland and the Silesian Championships in sports climbing.
- The entire staff of the Sports Centre of the Silesian University of Technology is doing very good and hard work. It is not only conducting classes and trainings, but also taking care of sports facilities, a lot of organizational matters related to competition in competitions, such as arranging t-shirts or transport. We start in all competitions, we do great every time also in Silesiada for first-year students, and the Day of Sport enjoys great interest. We try to provide students with great conditions, and we are glad that they can take advantage of it and be successful – explains Professor Krzysztof Czapla.
 
		Athletes in the colours of our University stood on the highest stage of the podium in sports bridge, dart, rowing ergometer of women and men, mountain biking, men's skiing, squash, chess, women's and men's tennis, table tennis of women and men, powerlifting, unihockey and sports climbing of women and men.
Silesian University of Technology also performed well in last year's edition of the Academic Championships of Poland, taking, among others, ninth place in the general classification and fifth place in the classification of technical universities, for which diplomas were also awarded during the gala.
