Silesian University of Technology supports the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity
Another final of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity is behind us. Once again, the Silesian University of Technology supported WOŚP (Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity). In the Gliwice market, a SUT stand was placed, while in the Volunteer Centre of the Silesian University of Technology the staff of the Orchestra, which this year collected over 60 thousand zlotys, operated.
At this year’s final there were science clubs, one could see a Mars rover, a motorcycle constructed by students and … “the cow of Prof. Stanisław Fryze.” In turn, in the Volunteer Centre of the Silesian University of Technology the staff of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, prepared in cooperation with students and teachers of the Academic Secondary Comprehensive School of the Silesian University of Technology had its headquarters.
- As every year our University supports the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, we are here in the Gliwice market with our students, PhD students, and lecturers, we present the potential of the Silesian University of Technology and at the same time we encourage you to support the Orchestra - said Magdalena Pawlaczek from the Centre for Promotion and Communication of the Silesian University of Technology.

The replica of the “cow of Prof Fryze “attracted the greatest interest among visitors to our stand. It was not a coincidence.
- We tell the story of Prof. Stanisław Fryze, who after the war came from Lviv to Gliwice with his cow. We will explain why this outstanding scientist, the creator of the power theory used today, one of the founders of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University, chose the Silesian University of Technology – said Daria Wojtasz from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
At the stand it was possible to scan QR codes, which referred to websites where one can learn about the professor’s biography, the memories of his colleagues and students.
The Silesian University of Technology’s stand also featured a motorcycle of the PolSl Racing Student Science Club and a Mars rover constructed by students from the AI – METH Science Club.
"We are presenting our latest Mars rover Fenix 3, which is a prototype of an exploration robot. The rover was very effective in encouraging donations to the orchestra. It can glue the heart of WOŚP itself or throw the banknote in the collection box” – says Jakub Gurgul from SKN AI – METH. – “Our club willingly supports such actions as the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. It costs us little; it is only a few hours a year, and we can help someone” – adds the student.

In the afternoon, the artists of the Academic Dance Ensemble of the Silesian “University of Technology “Dąbrowiacy” performed on the stage. There were also auctions. This year it was possible to bid a meeting over coffee and cake with the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology Prof. Marek Pawełczyk and the occasional autographed book of the Nobel Prize winner Prof. Brian Kobilka The winner of the auction was Jan Kaźmierczak, a student of the Silesian University of Technology and a member of the Science Club Safe Wall. The winner will also receive an invitation to the University’s Spring jubilee concert at the meeting with the Rector.
Congratulations!

This year, for the fourth time, in the Volunteer Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, hosted the headquarters of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, prepared in cooperation with students and teachers of the Academic Secondary Comprehensive School of the Silesian University of Technology. This year’s university staff was supported by over 40 volunteers, who were provided with a warm meal and drinks funded by companies cooperating with the Student Career Office of the Silesian University of Technology.
- “The students of our secondary comprehensive school willingly engage in all kinds of charity actions, even they come up with such an initiative themselves” - emphasized Aleksandra Chrupała from ALO (Academic Secondary Comprehensive School) in Gliwice.
Among the volunteers were Zuzanna, Paulina and Oliwia - students of ALO.
- “I just came here to help. The more volunteers there are, the more money we will raise for this noble cause. This collection is especially close to me, because when I was sick myself, I used equipment purchased by WOŚP. “– said Oliwia.
The youngest volunteer was 4 years old. Emily was volunteering with her parents for the third time.
“Even before our children came to the world, we were raising money for the orchestra. So, it is natural that we also now support this action, especially since Emilka, while in the hospital, used the equipment purchased by the WOŚP.” - Emilka's mother, Malwina Jabłońska, told us.
This year, the University’s staff collected 60 thousand zlotys.
