Silesian University of Technology in the IAEA report on the transformation from coal to atom
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has released a report entitled “Coal to Nuclear: Supporting a Clean Energy Transition,” which outlines possible pathways for the transformation of coal-based economies toward clean and sustainable nuclear energy. The document highlights the importance of Polish experience, including the role of the DEsire project (DEcarbonization and Sites REpowering) implemented at the Silesian University of Technology under the leadership of Dr Hab. Eng. Łukasz Bartela, Prof. SUT.
The DEsire project, coordinated by the Silesian University of Technology in cooperation with national partners, focuses on the development of education, research, and engineering competences in the area of modern nuclear technologies. The aim of the project is to develop a plan for decarbonization of the national energy sector by means of modernization with the use of Generation III/III+ and IV nuclear reactors.
The project is implemented as part of a consortium formed by five entities: Silesian University of Technology, Ministry of Energy, Energoprojekt-Katowice SA, Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology and Sobieski Institute Foundation. The project was financed under the 6th competition of the National Centre for Research and Development “Gospostrateg”.
The award of the DEsire project in the IAEA report confirms that the Silesian University of Technology actively participates in the international dialog on clean energy and sustainable development. The university is becoming one of the leaders of energy transformation, combining the potential of science, technology, and education toward a modern low-carbon economy.
