Silesian University of Technology in Serbia Workshops on scientific communication at the University of Educons

Scientific communication, modern forms of popularizing science and working with a camera. It is in these areas that scientists and students of the Serbian University of Educons trained during workshops with the Science Popularization Centre of the Silesian University of Technology.

Dissemination of research results and scientific projects among the recipients is an important element of informing the community about the activities of the university and building trust in science. Such tasks are also undertaken by scientists from the University of Educons in Sremska Kamenica in Serbia, implementing the project “Greenland. Microplastic – free environment.”

The Science Popularization Centre of the Silesian University of Technology was invited to cooperation by Prof. Dr Gordana Racic, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Quality of the Educational process of the University of Educons, a scientist and a representative of the project:” GREENland Microplastic – free environment.”  Dr Hab. Aleksandra Ziembińska-Buczyńska, prof. SUT conducted a workshop “Communication for environmental sciences – is microplastic ‘catchy’ enough to attract media attention?” which included theoretical knowledge and practical exercises in the field of strengthening competences from scientific communication, modern forms of science popularization and presentation in front of the camera.

Employees, PhD students and students of Educons learned about tools supporting the engagement of recipients, as well as ways of effectively disseminating knowledge in the media and preparing public speeches. They were able to test their skills first during three-minute speeches in front of the camera, and then during interviews with journalists.

During the visit to Serbia, The Science Popularization Centre also visited the Svilara cultural centre in Novi Sad, where the podcast “U Labu” is being hosted. Aleksandra Ziembińska-Buczyńska and Gordana Racić talked with the authors of the podcast, talking about activities promoting science in Serbia and Poland, as well as the challenges faced by science popularisers in both countries.

Both meetings were a great opportunity to exchange experiences and good practices between the Silesian University of Technology and the University of Educons, and they were also rich in new ideas concerning subsequent projects and joint activities in the field of scientific communication.
