Silesian University of Technology awarded in THE Impact Rankings
The Silesian University of Technology for the first time was included among 16 Polish universities in the international THE Impact Rankings, recognizing the involvement of universities in the implementation of the 17 United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
These goals constitute a proposal of an action plan for sustainable transformation of the world, incorporating the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The methodology of the ranking considered both traditional indicators defined in the areas of scientific research and education, and metrics related to the university management approach towards implementation of the sustainable development goals and the scope of activities undertaken.
The THE Impact ranking included 1406 universities from 106 countries/regions. The most recent overall edition placed the SUT in the top ten of Polish universities - between 801 and 1000, along with: Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Medical University of Gdańsk, , and the University of Wrocław.
In terms of implementation of individual UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Silesian University of Technology achieved the best result in Sustainable Development Goal 9: Industry, Innovation &Infrastructure - between 301 and 400 .
The SUT was also recognized for activities in other areas (positions 401-600): in SDG 7: Affordable & Clean Energy, SDG10: Reduced Inequalities, SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13 - climate action. Within the compulsory goal ) for all submitting universities - SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals - the SUT was placed on positions between 601-800.
- The University's inclusion in the prestigious THE Impact Rankings is a recognition of its activity towards the SDGs, the focus of which have been included both in the Development Strategy of the Silesian University of Technology for 2021-2026, but also in the actions undertaken within six Priority Research Areas. The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG4: Quality education, is also the foundation for cooperation in education and research of the eight partner universities forming the EURECA-PRO European University - highlighted the head of the Development Office Magdalena Kudewicz-Kiełtyka.
This year's ranking is the fourth edition. Top place went to Western Sydney University from Australia. In second position is the American Arizona State University, and third is the Western University in Canada. The fourth-place ex aequo was awarded to: King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia and University Sains Malaysia.
The awards, which are an additional confirmation of the achieved results, were presented on May 18, 2022, during the first international conference ScienceCon 2022, organized by PCG Academia, Elsevier and Times Higher Education. The awards were presented by the authors of the rankings.
