Silesian University of Technology at the International Congress on Education Quality

On Wednesday, the three-day International Congress on Education Quality, organized by the universities that are part of the Academic Consortium "Katowice - City of Science", started in Katowice. This is a new initiative dealing with the subject of the quality of academic education.

The ceremonial opening of the Congress on Thursday was attended by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk.

Prof. Mężyk emphasized that the education process is one of the main pillars of the higher education system - it is one of its missions, which should be implemented with the greatest care.

Nowadays, the Rector added, one should take into account the rapidly changing world and adapt to it. – “The environment in which we live is changing, technological development is taking place, civilization is progressing, the labour market is changing and will change even faster. We must prepare our graduates for this through interesting programs of directional studies, which will also give them the so-called competences of the future, based mainly on soft skills, creativity, individual development and the ability to learn throughout life” - said prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk.

He added that this poses new challenges to academic teachers and people developing study programs. – “Therefore, we need to think about how to effectively implement it, so that it is primarily for the benefit of our future graduates“ - emphasized the Rector.

In conclusion, Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk expressed his hope that the issue of improving the quality of education would not only be a set of bureaucratic procedures, but a guide to achieving excellence.

The first day of the congress consists of events organized by individual universities - the Silesian University of Technology invited participants to visit the Faculty of Materials Engineering in Katowice. On this day, topics related to strengthening the competences of teachers are discussed.

- "We want to talk about the quality of education, that is, on the one hand, how to attract good students, and on the other hand, how not to lose those acquired" - said the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education prof. Wojciech Szkliniarz.

He added that the solution is to individualize the education process. - "The key is to focus on the individual student, not to educate everyone in the same way and in the same way" - added the Vice-Rector.

Spotkanie rady ds. kształcenia

On the first day of the congress, presentations and shows of student science clubs are planned on the campus. The agenda also includes a meeting of the University Council for the Education Quality Assurance System and a meeting of the Education Council.

The next item is a lecture by the director of the Centre for the Popularization of Science, dr hab. Aleksandra Ziembińska-Buczyńska, prof. SUT- on the borderline between the popularization of science and formal education. An open discussion panel on Project/Problem Based Learning as an example of an innovative form of education is also planned.

On Thursday, the events will take place at the University of Silesia in Katowice and on the premises of the Silesian Museum. The program will include ceremonial inauguration of the congress, lectures, discussions and workshops. The theme of the day also includes accreditation issues.

The last, third day will be devoted to international aspects of the quality of education. On that day there will be lectures and discussions, most of them in English.

The International Congress on Education Quality is held in a hybrid formula - on-site in Katowice and online. Most events are open to the public.

The Director of the College of Studies at the Silesian University of Technology  - prof.
