The Declaration of the City of Science is an initiative aimed at integrating all residents of the Silesian Voivodeship into a common goal. It is to build a space for meetings, conversations, and various activities, which will result in the transformation of our region into an even better place to live. The Declaration of the City of Science is the result of actions taken as part of the celebrations of awarding Katowice the title of the European City of Science 2024. The year of EMNK (European City of Science) 2024 was filled with events, debates, and other activities during which we jointly celebrated the scientific wealth of our region. However, receiving this honourable distinction by the City of Katowice is only the beginning of the huge changes that await us in the coming years.
The transformation of the identity of our region is inevitable. Intensive exploitation of natural resources devastated the environment and health of many generations of Silesian residents. During EMNK 2024, many ideas emerged on how to diagnose and repair the damage that the industry has left behind, and how to continue the idea of the City of Science in the future.
We believe that science is the new industry of Silesia! Thanks to science, education, and art, we will be able to pay off the debt incurred to the environment and residents of cities and villages in our province. We will use the opportunities of learning – our common good – to transform the region into an even better place to live. We want to live in the City of Science and work together for change and development!
The ceremonial signing of the Declaration of the City of Science will take place during the City of Science evening, which will take place within the framework of the 8th Silesian Science Festival Katowice on Saturday 7th December at 19.00 on the main stage. The declaration will be signed by the rectors of universities affiliated as part of the Academic Consortium – Katowice City of Science and all those who are interested in the idea of the City of Science.
