Seminar with the participation of the Nobel Prize winner Victor R. Ambros

On Monday, May the 5th, 2025 at the Silesian University of Technology, a scientific seminar entitled “Silesian University of Technology for Medicine” was held with the participation of the Nobel Prize winner, Prof. Victor R. Ambros. Scientists of the Silesian University of Technology presented the results of their research and the scope of activities in the field of biomedicine.

A prominent scientist, Victor R. Ambros, Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine in 2024, took part in the seminar “Silesian University of Technology for Medicine” at the Silesian University of Technology. The seminar was an event accompanying the ceremony of awarding the doctorate honoris causa to the professor, which is scheduled for the 6th of May 2025

During the seminar, which took place in the Lecture Hall of the Biotechnology Centre of the Silesian University of Technology, scientists of our University had the opportunity to give presentations and talk of their research results. They also talked about projects implemented in the field of broadly understood biomedicine.

- “After listening to a few speeches, it was clear that Prof. Ambros was clearly interested and asked questions about our projects, so this is his area of research. After a short conversation with our guest, I conclude that there is hope for cooperation with our scientists” – said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Marek Pawełczyk.

The first steps of this cooperation were already taken in 2021, when Prof. Ambros took part in a conference organized by the Silesian University of Technology together with the National Institute of Oncology and the Centre for Supporting Cancer Research. The professor then gave an online lecture. In turn, in 2023, he appeared in person at the same conference.

- “When in 2024 it turned out that he received the Nobel Prize, we appreciated the importance of his research even more, so we asked if he would like to accept the title of doctor honoris causa of our University and the answer pleasantly surprised us.” - said Prof. Krzysztof Fujarewicz. - “We value the opportunity to cooperate with him, which consists in consulting and giving opinions on our research and projects, but we also hope that in the future we will be able to send our employees and PhD students to the research centre where Victor R. Ambros works,” - he added.

During the seminar, the Nobel laureate listened to presentations on, among others, computational oncology, the scope of activities of the Biotechnology Centre and molecular diagnostic tests.

- “I learned a lot about the research carried out here that I had no idea about before. The presentation on micro-RNA projects and the reaction to radiation was very intriguing. This is the kind of work I could potentially work on,” said Victor R. Ambros. “Mathematical modelling, on the other hand, is not my strong point, but if these projects involve cooperation and also involve expertise in various other fields, I see a field for joint activity here,” - he added.
