Scientists of the Silesian University of Technology – members of the Polish Academy of Sciences
The Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) is a scientific institution associated with enormous prestige. It gathers outstanding scientists, fullfils spectacular scientific achievements and attracts with its elitism. Being a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences is a reason for pride and recognition in the scientific environment and in the society. Prof. Marek Pawełczyk, Vice Rector for Science and Development of the Silesian University of Technology and Prof. Mieczysław Łapkowski were accepted as members of the PAS, while Prof. Andrzej Katunin were accepted as member of the Academy of Young Scientists. The title is awarded for life.
Members of the Polish Academy of Sciences are scientists whose achievements, attitude and commitment have earned them the authority and wide recognition in the scientific community, and who have been selected to join the elite group of corporations of scientists as a result of a complex, multi-stage procedure. PAS institutes, including 14 with the scientific category A+, are entities that stand out not only on the national scientific and research map, but also in international scientific databases. They focus on specific research tasks, are characterised by dedicated staff, high flexibility and dynamism, allowing for quick change of the structure and directions of conducted research, which is a particular value in the face of rapidly changing scientific trends.
"Without the Polish Academy of Sciences it would be difficult to imagine the development of science in Poland in such a dynamic way as it is today. The Polish Academy of Sciences is of fundamental importance for science in Poland. For several decades of its functioning it has proven that it occupies a leading position in the field of scientific research. Its institutes are very active in research. Broad cooperation, e.g. within committees associating scientists and industry representatives, enables the exchange of ideas and cooperation, but also voicing opinions on socially and economically important issues” says prof. Marek Pawełczyk, Vice Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, a correspondent member of PAS.
"Acceptance into membership of the Polish Academy of Sciences is a great prestige both for me and for the scientific units in which I work. As a corresponding member, my task is to represent this institution with dignity, to carry out scientific research at a very high level and also to convey knowledge to young students of science” says Prof. Mieczysław Łapkowski, a corresponding member of PAS.
"Appointment to the Polish Academy of Sciences is a great prestige for a scientist, but also a great responsibility, because we take action not only for the sake of science itself, but we are also active in the field of scientific policy, representation of our academic community not only in the country, but also in Europe" says Prof. Andrzej Katunin, a member of the Academy of Young Scientists.
The meeting with the participation of the authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences and members of the corporation and directors of scientific units, during which the appointments were solemnly handed over, took place on the 28th of February in Katowice, at the headquarters of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Krasińskiego 8, the building of the Silesian University of Technology).
