Scientists of the Silesian University of Technology in Cambodia - as part of the international Erasmus+ project

In July, scientists from the Silesian University of Technology went to Cambodia, where a meeting of managers of the international project "Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction", of which our University is a leader, took place. This project concerns the creation of studies in the field of geomatics to reduce the risk of natural disasters at six Asian universities.

Project entitled "Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction" (geoDRR) has been implemented since December 2020, and its completion is planned for November 2023.

- The aim of the project is to launch a new interdisciplinary study specialization "Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction" at 6 Asian universities (Cambodia - Svay Rieng University, National University of Battambang, Malaysia - Universiti Sains Malaysia, University Utara Malaysia, Philippines - University of the Cordilleras, Xavier University). Graduates of this 2nd degree specialization will have competences in forecasting, combating and dealing with natural disasters - said the project coordinator, Eng. Krzysztof Tomiczek PhD.

European partners are 3 universities from: Poland (Silesian University of Technology), Greece (University of West Attica) and Spain (University of Alicante) and a consulting and IT group from Luxembourg (Novel Group).

In July, workshops, training sessions and a working meeting for participants and managers of this international project took place. As reported by Krzysztof Tomiczek PhD, trainings, workshops and meetings took place in Svay Rieng University and Phnom Penh - the capital of Cambodia.

The Silesian University of Technology was represented by: Eng. Krzysztof Tomiczek PhD from the Department of Geoengineering and Resource Exploitation and co-implementing the project:  Eng. Katarzyna Tobór-Osadnik PhD, prof. of Silesian University of Technology and Eng. Anna Bluszcz PhD, prof. Of Silesian University of Technology from the Department of Safety Engineering.

Czworo ludzi stoi i patrzy w obiektyw.

- The Polish team prepared and delivered 5 training papers and 1 information paper for workshop participants. The topics of the papers were: GIS systems, teaching pedagogy, selected problems of soil stability and ECTS scoring in the European Union. Other European universities have prepared trainings on the methodology of using the LIDAR system in slope monitoring, geoinformatics in slope monitoring, photometry systems, earthquake forecasting, cloud data analysis systems, examples of flood phenomena analysis, the impact of earthquakes on buildings and earthquake monitoring - said Eng. Krzysztof Tomiczek PhD.

During the visit, there were also meetings with the Rector's authorities of Svay Rieng University (prof. Tum Saravuth) and with the authorities of the National Committee for Disaster Management - Minister HE Hang Samoeun and Secretary General Ma Norith. In the form of a seminar, the hosts presented the most important facts about natural disasters in Cambodia, as well as methods of forecasting and combating them. The seminar was accompanied by a discussion panel, which was also a summary of the weekly workshops. During the meeting, in the presence of the university's Deputy Deans, Deans and Rectors, the university's applications for the creation of a new study specialization were approved.

- The stay in Cambodia was accompanied by the opportunity to observe violent weather phenomena live - currently in the region of the city of Svay Rieng there is a rainy season, which is accompanied by heavy rainfall, storms and violent gusts of wind - concluded Eng. Tomiczek PhD.
