Scientists of the Silesian University of Technology at the PRECOP 27 conference
Technologies for the climate, climate education, energy efficiency, circular economy, wind energy and sustainable transport - these were only some of the topics discussed by the participants of the PRECOP27 climate conference. The event was held from 18th to 19th October 2022 at the International Congress Centre in Katowice. Scientists from the Silesian University of Technology also participated in the discussion panels.
The aim of the PRECOP 27 conference was to prepare the Polish position for the upcoming COP27 Climate Summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. During two days of debates, scientists, politicians, local government officials and business representatives discussed, among others on the transformation of the energy sector and the entire economy towards reducing its impact on the environment and climate, green financing of investments, initiatives of cities and local governments for the climate as well as sustainable construction, agriculture and transport.
Among the speakers were scientists from the Silesian University of Technology. On the first day of the conference, Dr hab. Eng. Joanna Ferdyn Grygierek, prof. SUT, director of the Centre for Climate and Environmental Protection of SUT took part in the panel called “Technologies for Climate.”
- “The Silesian University of Technology, as a Research University, has set itself six Priority Research Areas and practically each of them to some extent conducts research in the field of technologies for the climate. Our scientists deal with issues related to environmental protection, energy, electromobility, i.e. technologies that are extremely important from the point of view of the green deal” - said Dr Eng. Joanna Ferdyn Grygierek, prof. of Silesian University of Technology

On the second day of the conference, panel on climate education took place among other events. It was attended by Dr Eng. Monika Czop from the Faculty of Environmental and Power Engineering.
- “When it comes to climate education, we should educate not only young people, but also the elderly by selecting the appropriate message for them. We have to build attitudes, shape an informed consumer who has reliable and full knowledge. (...) We should talk about smog, about the fact that in Silesia a lot of people suffer from diseases of the upper respiratory tract, which is partly a consequence of the conditions we live in and what kind of air we breathe. Unfortunately, there is a myth that we used coal for so many years and no one got sick. It's just that it was not said once, because nobody wants to talk about the fact that people die because of air” - said Dr Eng. Monika Czop.
The participants of the PRECOP 27 conference also discussed energy efficiency. This panel was attended by Dr hab. Eng. Leszek Remiorz, professor of the Silesian University of Technology from the Faculty of Environmental and Power Engineering.
- “Energy efficiency is a key topic that affects all activities - industrial, technical and whatever we imagine. When it comes to new technologies, there are of course leading directions such as hydrogen, green energy and wind energy. But all of this still requires research. What will be dominant remains to be seen in the future. At the moment, it seems that hydrogen is the future, but hydrogen technologies are not widely used yet and also require research”, - said Dr Eng. Leszek Remiorz, professor of SUT.
PRECOP27 participants also discussed the circular economy, wind energy, food crisis and sustainable transport. The organizers of the conference were: United Nations Global Compact Network Poland - the Polish secretariat of the members of the world's largest initiative bringing together sustainable business and the PTWP Group.
