Scientist of the Silesian University of Technology participated in a volunteer campaign at the wards of child oncology
Dr Eng. Adrian Kapczyński from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics took part in a voluntary campaign for small patients from oncology wards in Katowice and Zabrze. This is the first event of this type implemented by ING Bank Śląski, Silesian University of Technology and the Iskierka Foundation.
As part of the campaign, volunteers visited small patients on 24 May 2024 at two paediatric oncology wards – in the Upper Silesian Child Health Centre in Katowice and in the Clinical Hospital of the Medical University of Silesia in Zabrze.
During the visit, the volunteers prepared workshops during which the children learned how to operate an ATM machine, do shopping at the bazaar, from which they could later prepare a delicious meal.

As the authors of the book "Vademecum of paediatric oncology. Games & Fun” point out: “The reality of sick children is a hospital reality. The state of health and the hospital wards very often do not allow children to have typical fun. And they are still children – they need fun in their lives to develop and maintain normality. Thanks to it, children can feel just like children – without baggage related to the disease” – said Dr Eng. Adrian Kapczyński, who played the role of a converted cyberbully Adrian as part of the event.
Our scientist told the children about cyberthreats, new technologies and the benefits and threats they bring.
– “It was an extraordinary undertaking, requiring mastering emotions above all. The smiles on the faces of children clearly indicated that the volunteers managed to fully meet the tasks set before them” – adds Dr Eng. Adrian Kapczyński.
The voluntary action at the wards of child oncology is the first, but not the last, event of this type implemented by ING Bank Śląski, Silesian University of Technology and the Iskierka Foundation.
