Science Days of the Silesian University of Technology

Science Days were held at the Silesian University of Technology. During the event, the University presented its achievements and scientific potential in six Priority Research Areas. There were also Open Days of Laboratories, during which one could visit the laboratories of the University in Gliwice, Katowice and Zabrze.

Days of Science were addressed to scientists, students and representatives of the socio-economic environment. Eminent scientists from abroad with the status of Highly Cited Researchers and winners of ERC grants were also present. Participants discussed the key and most up-to-date scientific problems and topics related to sustainable development and improving the health and life of residents. The issues raised were focused around the Priority Research Areas (POB) distinguished at the Silesian University of Technology.

- Science Days is a new event related to the implementation of the "Excellence Initiative - Research University" program. We want to review the achievements related to it and show the academic community the possibility of internal cooperation, because all great universities develop thanks to cooperation between faculties or departments. It is also an opportunity to present what research is being carried out in individual priority research areas - said the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk.

During the event, in addition to the International Conference of Priority Research Areas, Open Laboratories Days were also held, during which employees, doctoral students and students could familiarize themselves with the equipment at the University and the possibilities of using it in their own research.  – We want to present key laboratories related to particular research areas. We invite not only guests from outside, but also our scientists, because it turns out that they did not always have the opportunity to get to know all the laboratories at our University - said Vice-Rector for Science and Development prof. Marek Pawełczyk.

As emphasized by Dr hab. Eng. Grzegorz Sierpiński, prof. SUT, coordinator of POB4, such events as Science Days are of key importance for scientists.  – The point is that science should be open to the world and the world should be open to science. Therefore, the possibility of communication and exchange of experiences between scientists is very important - he said. - We usually work in specific faculties, specific departments, so this opportunity to see something outside our walls is very important - adds the scientist.

On the first day, research conducted in three research areas was presented: POB1 - Computational Oncology and Personalized Medicine, POB2 - Artificial Intelligence and Data Processing and POB3 - Materials of the Future. Earlier, a lecture "Is science important?”  by prof. Seeram Ramakrishna - an outstanding scientist currently working at the National University of Singapore (National University of Singapore) with the current status of Highly Cited Researcher was delivered. At the beginning of his lecture, the professor, who has been visiting Silesia for several days, emphasized the importance of the Silesian University of Technology in the transformation of our region.  - During the two days of my visit, I could learn a lot about the history of this region as well as investments that are transforming the local economy and the role played by the Silesian University of Technology in this process - said prof. Seeram Ramakrishna.

On July 5, there was presentation of  three research areas: POB4 - Smart Cities and Mobility of the Future and POB5 - Process Automation and Industry 4.0. and POB6 - Climate and Environmental Protection, Modern Power Engineering.
