Safety first
Learning through play - in accordance with this principle, the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation provides the youngest with the necessary knowledge about safety.
Another, satisfied group of children took part in workshops organized in the Faculty’s workshops.
What is personal protective equipment, how to behave in an emergency situation, what is a defibrillator and how to use it - among other things, these issues were raised during the “Safety First” workshop, in which children from the School and Preschool Complex in Żernica took part. Knowledge of serious topics was assimilated in a way adequate to their age – preschoolers took part in a rescue operation in the excavation, during which they saved a wounded teddy bear. The children had a great time and at the same time learned the safety rules divided into individual and collective work. The initiator and leader of the classes is dr Eng. Aneta Grodzicka, recently appointed director of the Centre for Student Activity, who has developed workshops programs addressed to four age groups: from pre-school children to secondary school graduates.
– The topic of classes, i.e. broadly understood safety, was born together with the directors of kindergartens and schools, we have a well-equipped studio to conduct such classes. The idea is to promote learning and safe behaviours from an early age – emphasizes the originator of the workshop.

Classes have been held free of charge for willing institutions since 2019 with the support of the university authorities, Faculty and management of the Department of Safety Engineering and the Department of Geoengineering and Resource Exploitation.
– The idea is to influence children’s awareness from an early age, so that they are not afraid to react in a situation of danger – said dr Eng. Marcin Krause, from the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation, who helps in organizing and conducting classes. – These children will one day be the best ambassadors of the Silesian University of Technology, and who knows, maybe some of them will come back to us as students – he added.
– I believe that such workshops are very necessary, kindergartens and schools do not have such equipment as the university, classes complement the knowledge that we try to pass on to children – said Katarzyna Oleszowska from the School-Preschool Complex in Żernica. “I can see that the children liked the classes very much, and I did too,” the teacher added.
This is not the only initiative to popularize science addressed to the youngest, on Thursday, March 7th at the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering and Industrial Automation will be held the 4th Scientific Conference for Children and Youth organized this year with the support of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
