Repower World Summit 2025
Scientists from all over the world, representatives of the largest energy and heating companies, technology developers and city authorities are debating the potential paths of decarbonization of coal energy. In Katowice, the 2025 Repower Worls Summit is currently under way, an event organized by the Silesian University of Technology as part of the DEsire Energy Transformation Platform.
The event brought together many foreign guests representing renowned scientific and research centres such as Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, and Institut Teknologi Bandung. Since yesterday, the Silesian Museum has been holding panels and debates on decarbonization of the energy sector towards low-carbon and ecological, which present a wide perspective of issues taking into account, among others, economic, legal and fair transformation of regions.
–“ This event is extremely important considering the need to face the challenges posed by the need for the transformation of the economy”. – said during the opening ceremony Prof Sebastian Werle, Vice-Rector for Science and International Cooperation of the Silesian University of Technology, emphasizing the long-term role of the University in creating decarbonization pathways. - “World reports say that regions where coal-fired power was once dominant thanks to the transformation have gained a chance for technological, economic and social development, I hope that these aspects will also be heard during the meeting,” added Professor Werle.
During the first day of the event, participants of the panels discussed Polish strategies for replacing energy sources, heating and on just transformation; the next day was devoted to global strategies, financing, and the path of coal-to-nuclear decarbonization, i.e. based on nuclear energy.
– “As Silesian University of Technology, we do not try to lobby for one direction of transformation, each power plant, heat and power plant operate in different conditions, so we need a case analysis for each plant that can be decarbonized, the optimal solution is to be found, adaptable to systems also from an economic and social point of view.” – said Dr. Eng. Łukasz Bartela, Prof. SUT from the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology, the event organizer.
Repower World Summit 2025 is held under the patronage of many recognized institutions, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Ministry of State Assets, and the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
