Why study at the Silesian University of Technology

The world is changing at a dizzying pace, no wonder that in order to keep up with it, some graduates prefer to get a profession by completing various, specialized courses, instead of going to the university. Is it right? It gives the illusion that higher education is not necessary. This is what those who treat technical universities as “nurseries” preparing for work in the manufacturing industry think - says Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk, Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland. – In the meantime, the mission of every university is not only to pass on knowledge, but above all to teach young people to think. We need to equip them with a range of competencies that will enable them to function in a rapidly changing world where many things are difficult to predict. We need to teach students how to be creative and innovative to meet the challenges of reality.

Dr Tomasz Rożek in the podcast “Let’s talk about science” reminds that without engineers our world will stop developing. Modern universities such as Silesian University of Technology respond to these needs by offering modern laboratories and cooperation with industry. As emphasized by Dr Rafał Setlak, there is already a shortage of about two hundred thousand electrical engineers on the market. - These numbers should sound encouraging, we add to this an attractive offer of education - he emphasizes.

Studies are not only about gaining knowledge, it is also about opening a new, unique stage in life, building a master-student relationship, making friendships, in short – as many graduates confirm – the most beautiful period in life. One of them is  Prof Jerzy Buzek, former Prime Minister and President of the European Parliament, scientist, and MEP, who in 1963 obtained a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and energy from the Silesian University of Technology.

An outstanding graduate of the Silesian University of Technology strongly encourages young people to study. “This is a unique period, the most important in our whole life, when we acquire certain cultural features that we will not get anywhere outside the university. These are a unique few years in which we shape our entire vision of the world, our cognitive system, and therefore necessarily for studies, and I can recommend the Silesian University of Technology with full conviction and with all my heart - concluded Prof. Jerzy Buzek.

Dagmara Jankowska, a graduate of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology, also recommends studies at   the Silesian University of Technology. – My father, also a graduate of the Silesian University of Technology, took me to the Open Day. I was interested in both biological and chemical issues as well as those related to materials. There I saw everything with my own eyes and did not hesitate to choose the course of study, I chose materials engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology. I had a lot of concerns about mathematics and physics, but they are not as terrible as they paint it. I passed both subjects, although I did not extend any of them at the Matura exam, so I started from the basic level – recalls Dagmara, who after graduation did not have the slightest problems with finding a job. Thanks to the Silesian University of Technology, she met many people from the industry, which was very useful in later business contacts. – I meet with such an approach in some young people that studying is a waste of time, but I absolutely disagree with it, and I strongly encourage you to study, especially at a technical university – says the graduate.

After completing your technical studies, you will easily get a well-paid job and have a good prospect of developing your professional career. The technical university will not only provide you with specialist knowledge and practically prepare you for the profession, during your studies you will also gain many skills valued by employers, such as analytical thinking and preparation for solving real problems, or experience in working in a team, often international. Students of the Silesian University of Technology are developing in this direction.
