Rare technical literature books on display in the Library of the Silesian University of Technology

The most valuable and oldest copies of scientific books, the only copies of unique scripts handed over from hand to hand, the first curricula – were presented today at the exhibition “Our Beginnings” in the Library of the Silesian University of Technology. This is a unique opportunity to see the valuable collections, as the exhibition will be open until tomorrow, i.e. May 8th. The event was organized as part of the Book Week, one of the 50 weeks in the City of Science.

The Library of the Silesian University of Technology showed its most valuable treasures. Among the examples presented at the exhibition are, among others, the originals of the founding documents of the University, or the curricula of the Lviv University of Technology, on which Lviv professors based, when organizing the first departments of the Silesian University of Technology in 1945. At the exhibition you can also see books brought by the professors from Lviv.

– The Library of the Silesian University of Technology is one of the first libraries established after World War II, similarly to the libraries of the Wrocław, Łódź and Gdańsk Universities of Technology. Libraries were created in difficult conditions, without rooms, without a library, without employees, but the collections were gathered by various methods. These most valuable, oldest books, some of them in only one copy, can be seen at the exhibition – said Dr Hab. Renata Frączek, director of the Library of the Silesian University of Technology, who invites all interested to visit the exhibition. “Of course, you can view these collections in a digital version, but seeing them in the original is impressive,” she added.

The opening of the exhibition was accompanied by a presentation of the most valuable technical books in the collections of the Library of the Silesian University of Technology
– We observe a certain reversal from a paper book, a borrowed one, today students use libraries in a slightly different way – said Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Bogusław Łazarz, Vice-Rector for General Affairs of the Silesian University of Technology. – That is why the plan of renovation of the library was thought out in this way, in order to create comfortable conditions for students to work here and I hope to convince them that this retreat from the paper book would not be final.
