Push-ups for health

Many attractions awaited the participants of the World Push-Up Day combined with the National Calisthenics Games Phoenix Games. The event, co-organized by the Silesian University of Technology, took place at the Mrowisko Student Culture Centre.

On Sunday, June 23rd, sport ruled in the "Mrowisko" area. And although the next attempt to break the Guinness record for doing push-ups by the largest possible number of people in one place was not successful, it gathered almost eighty people. However, the organizers do not give up. Besides, the issue of the record breaking is not the most important thing for them.

- This is the second edition of the event and there will definitely be more - announces Juan Miguel Zumeta, event organizer from the Phoenix Time Foundation. - We have prepared many attractions for everyone - children and teenagers could see, among others, the offer of sports clubs and children's schools. Our guests prepared interesting lectures, and the competition in the games was very interesting. We want to continue to promote a healthy and conscious lifestyle. I think our competitions show that by paying attention to details that are extremely important, you can do amazing things with the human body. Many thanks to all our partners, exhibitors and the Silesian University of Technology for supporting our event. The presence of scientists increases its prestige. We will do everything to make the next editions even better.

At one of the demonstration stands, scientists and students from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology presented the possibilities of conducting biomechanical tests of push-ups and calisthenics training. Many people came to them willing to analyse the position of the body's centre of gravity while performing push-ups.

- For this purpose, we measured, among others, hand grip strength and assessment of body mass composition. There was also a station for testing the technique of performing push-ups and postural stability - explains Dr Hab. Eng. Robert Michnik, Prof. SUT, who also gave a lecture titled: " Engineering support for sports training - Biomechanical analysis of push-ups". - I talked about, among other things, biomechanical tools that can be used to support sports training.

- We also conducted surveys to see what the activity level is among people practicing calisthenics and to find out in which areas of the musculoskeletal system they most often suffer from injuries - says Dr Eng. Agata Guzik-Kopyto.

There was no shortage of emotions at the Phoenix Game Calisthenics Games. Five competitors took part in the competition. Calisthenics are exercises performed using your own body weight. The athletes competed in three competitions, which gave no results - the two competitors collected the highest number of points. The organizers ordered extra time, in which Dawid Adamczak was better than Łukasz Milczuk and won the main prize.
