Professor Józef Stefan Pastuszka passed away

It is with deep regret that we inform that on the 19th of January, 2022, Prof. Józef Stefan Pastuszka, who was an employee and long-term head of the Department of Air Protection at the Faculty of Energy and Environmental Engineering, passed away suddenly.

Prof. Pastuszka was born on the 17 of March 1953 in Świętochłowice. In 1978 he graduated from the University of Silesia in Katowice. He defended his doctoral thesis in 1986 and obtained the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences (doktor habilitowany) in 2002. In 2017 he was awarded the title of professor of technical sciences.

In 2004, he started working at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice. He was employed as an associate professor and then, from 2006 to 2017, he was the head of the Department of Air Protection. From December 2020 he was Deputy Director of the Centre of Climate and Environmental Protection. Previously, he worked at several research centres in Poland (in 1977-1981 at the Department of Solid State Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Zabrze; in 1981-1992 at the Katowice Branch of the Institute of Environmental Protection; in 1992-2003 at the Institute of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health - WHO Collaborating Centre in Sosnowiec; in 2003-2006 at the Faculty of Public Health of the Medical Academy of Silesia in Bytom). In addition, he also worked in USA (1990-1991 as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati, 1998-1999 as Visiting Scientist at the University of California).

Main research interests of Prof. Pastuszka were focused on air protection issues in the aspect of environmental engineering and environmental health. In his scientific work he dealt with research on atmospheric aerosols in the field of their emission, transport in the environment, deposition and re-emission. He has continuously cooperated with numerous universities at home and abroad. His achievements include many reviews of monographs, doctoral theses and opinions of applications for the award of habilitation degree.

He was the author or co-author of numerous scientific publications, papers presented at national and international conferences and patents. He has promoted several PhDs and dozens of MAs and engineers.

He was a valued expert, scientist and academic, but also a modest, kind and friendly person.

The funeral ceremony will begin on the 22nd of January 2022 at 10:00 am with a mass in the Church of St. Jadwiga in Chorzów, 51 Wolności Street.
