We are sad to announce that on the 5th of February this year, at the age of 88, an outstanding scientist, Prof. Dr. Hab. Zygmunt Szymon Kolenda, Honorary Professor of the Silesian University of Technology (2015) passed away.

He was a graduate (1960) and a doctor of the Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering (1965) of our University. The supervisor of the doctoral thesis was Prof. Dr Eng. Jan Szargut. The deceased was a reviewer of many doctorates, habilitations, and applications for professorships of our University employees. The list of co-authors of his 150 publications includes employees of the Silesian University of Technology more than twenty times.

Prof. Kolenda was an employee of AGH UST, where for two terms he was the Dean and head of the Department until his retirement in 2006. He was also an active member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and many national and foreign scientific and professional associations.

He was active in social movements, foundations, and local governments, among others - he chaired the Krakow Citizens’ Committee of NSZZ Solidarność. He was a visiting professor at the universities of Mexico and Canada. He has taught at numerous foreign universities.

The funeral of the deceased Professor Kolenda will be preceded by a funeral mass on February 10th (Monday) at 1:00 p.m. at the Salwator Cemetery in Krakow.
