Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Jan Zych has passed away

We inform with regret that on September 08th, 2024, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Jan Zych died at the age of eighty-four.

Throughout his professional life, Prof. Dr Hab. Eng. Jan Zych was associated with the Faculty of Mining, Safety Engineering, and Industrial Automation (formerly the Faculty of Mining and Geology).

Prof. J. Zych was born in 27.05.1940 in Odrzykoń. In 1958 he graduated from the Secondary Comprehensive School in Krosno, and then began his studies at the Mining Faculty of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, which he graduated in May 1964. He started his professional career on 01.10.1964 in the Department of Mining Damage Control at the Mining Faculty of the Silesian University of Technology, and in the period from 01.10.1969 to 30.09.1971 he worked in the Department of Geodesy and Surface Protection. After defending his doctoral thesis in 1972, he began working as an assistant professor. In 1987 he published his habilitation thesis, on the basis of which he obtained a scientific degree: Habilitated Doctor. From 1989 to 1991, he worked as an associate professor. From 1991 to 2003 he worked as an associate professor and then as a full professor. In the years 1990-93 he was Vice-Dean for Student Affairs at the Faculty of Mining and Geology of the Silesian University of Technology, and in the years 1991-94 he was Director of the Institute of Geomechanics, Underground Construction and Surface Protection. He retired in 2015.

Professor Jan Zych was an outstanding and highly valued scientist and was also highly appreciated  in industry, as a specialist in the field of mining area protection, a creator of the method of fan exploitation of shaft pillars and a non-linear theory of forecasting the impact of mining exploitation on the rock and surface. He has published more than one hundred articles in scientific journals. He was also the author and co-author of textbooks and monographs. The professor has been honoured with numerous awards and prizes, as well as state decorations, including the Golden Cross of Merit and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

In the deceased we lose not only an outstanding expert, but also a teacher who willingly shared his knowledge and experience with younger researchers.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, 12.09.2024 at 15:00 in the parish church
 in Odrzykoń. The funeral will take place after the Holy Mass, at the parish cemetery in Odrzykoń.
