“Physics and Ecology" - we know the winners of the competition.
The jury assessed not only the knowledge, but also the way it was presented. This year, young people from secondary schools from all over Poland prepared ambitious research and analytical works related to environmental and climate protection. The winners were awarded attractive prizes and additional points when recruiting for the field of technical physics run by the Silesian University of Technology.
The first place in the competition went to Matylda Miedzińska, a student of the second grade of the Secondary School in Częstochowa, who prepared the work "Environmental pollution and climate change - How to monitor?". The winner built a meteorological station from publicly available components, which measured pressure, temperature, air humidity and the concentration of suspended dust. – I wanted to show that specialized software and sensors are not necessary to carry out such observations. The tests took place in January, hence the concentration of particulate matter monitored by me was much higher than the norm. I am very surprised, but also happy that the jury rated my work so highly. said the winner.
The second place was taken by Piotr Kierach and Maksymilian Zyśko from the Complex of Secondary Schools No. 1 in Lubliniec, who presented a paper on the use of UV radiation for water treatment. The third place was awarded by the jury to Julia Korseń and Klaudia Niczyporuk from the Complex of Secondary Schools No. 3 in Biała Podlaska for the work "Air pollution in different regions of Poland".
- I must admit that I am very positively surprised by the level of knowledge of young people, which is above average - summed up dr hab. Eng. Adam Michczyński, prof. SUT, director of the Institute of Physics. - Participants of the competition had to prepare a presentation on one of the topics we suggested related to environmental protection and, of course, physics, perceived as an element of the world around us. We also required that the work be of a research or analytical nature. The finalists had to present their presentations within 8 minutes and I have to admit that they did a great job - added the professor.
Competition "Physics and Ecology" dedicated to prof. Mieczysław Pazdur has a long tradition at the University - this year its 26th edition was held, resumed after a several-year break related, among others, to the coronavirus pandemic. The young people's presentations were listened to by the retired, honorary professor of the Silesian University of Technology, Anna Pazdur, who organized the competition for many years after her husband's death. - Physics is not difficult at all, it describes the phenomena that happen around us, curiosity about the world is enough to get interested in this science - said Professor Pazdur. - One can see that the enthusiasm of young people is not weakening, which makes me very happy.
The aim of the competition is to disseminate knowledge about environmental and climate protection, to encourage creative thinking and to popularize science. - The point is for young people to swallow this scientific bug - argued prof. dr hab. Eng. Wojciech Szkliniarz, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Education who congratulated the winners. – We see how talented young people are, and they, in turn, can get to know our University on the occasion of such a competition, so the benefits are mutual.
The main prizes in the competition were tablets, e-book readers, smartwatches, books, video courses funded by sponsors, as well as 30 additional preferential points in the qualifying procedure for the field of study of technical physics.
