PhD student of the Silesian University of Technology, holder of L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women and Science scholarship
Six exceptional Polish researchers have been awarded in the 24th edition of L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women and Science. Among the winners is a PhD student at the Faculty of Chemistry - Justyna Jakubska.
At a time when the world is struggling with many challenges – from climate change to pandemics – diversity in research teams is becoming even more important for finding innovative solutions. Unfortunately, despite the growing number of women in certain areas of science, such as medical and health sciences (57.6% women) and agriculture (57.1% women), there are still areas where gender disparities are clearly visible.
Therefore, in the face of growing social problems that are emerging in our reality with greater intensity than ever before, the participation of women in science is crucial. Gender diversity in research teams has a positive impact on creativity and effectiveness in problem solving. The limited representation of women in science can therefore slow down the development of research perspectives and innovation.
The applications of this year’s scholarship holders in the program were assessed by a jury composed of outstanding representatives of Polish science, chaired by Prof. Dr Hab. Ewa Łojkowska. Among the best applications, 6 projects were distinguished, awarding their authors: 3 habilitation scholarships in the amount of PLN 40 000, 2 doctoral scholarships in the amount of PLN 35 000 and a master’s scholarship in the amount of PLN 25 000
Among the winners of the L’Oréal-UNESCO program for Women and Science, in the Master’s degree category is Justyna Jakubska from the Faculty of Chemistry at the Silesian University of Technology.
The scientist deals with research on biodegradable and bactericidal packaging materials. Her work focuses on the development of ecological materials from chitosan, sodium alginate and starch that could be an alternative to plastic.
