Open Day of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering

More than 300 secondary school pupils from the Silesian Voivodeship took part in the Open Day of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology. During the event, the youth could get to know the Faculty, visit modern laboratories and talk to students and scientists.

The Open Day at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering took place once again and as every year it enjoyed great interest among secondary school pupils.

- We want to show what we do, what our daily work looks like. Pupils  could talk to students and lecturers, see modern laboratories, see that by studying at our Faculty one can not only gain knowledge, but also develop one’s passions, for example in Science Clubs - said the Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering Dr Hab. Eng. Marcin Basiaga, Prof. SUT .

- In my opinion, events such as the Open Day are the best way to attract potential students - adds the Dean.

The Open Day began with a short presentation of the Faculty’s educational offer, followed by a lecture entitled “From idea to surgery: How biomedical engineering changes veterinary orthopaedics.” It was delivered by Mateusz Pawlik, a graduate and currently a PhD student at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and co-founder of the rapidly growing CABIOMEDE company. It develops surgical plans related to the use of individual guides and implants used in surgical procedures in veterinary medicine. During the lecture, the PhD student told the pupils about the advantages of studying biomedical engineering.

 - From my point of view, this is a very interesting field of study because everything related to medicine, human, biology is concentrated here in engineering form, and yet all our lives we deal with medical engineering. We are born in hospitals surrounded by medical instruments, then during our lives we go to doctors, where medical equipment is also used, so this medical engineering applies to each of us – said Mateusz Pawlik.

After the lecture, the pupils visited modern laboratories in the European HealthTech Innovation Centre (EHTIC) then visited the stands of science clubs operating at the Faculty, where they could see what the students do.

-  At our stand we present two laparoscopic simulators - one digital imitating the interior of the human body, the other one more analogue, where one can practice dragging the line through the openings - says Dominika Król from the Student Science Club BioSoft. – Through such fun – the competition we want to show students that what we do is very interesting – adds the student.

- Biomedical engineering is a very interesting field of study - adds Inga Szotowska from SKN BioSoft. - I met fantastic, ambitious colleagues here, we have a lot of opportunities, we can take part in projects, Erasmus+ program. At the Faculty there are three student science clubs in which we can develop our skills, we also have access to a modern laboratory base – emphasizes the student.

The Faculty of Biomedical Engineering is the only such faculty in Poland and the youngest at the Silesian University of Technology. This year it celebrated its 15th anniversary. Students can study here in two fields: biomedical engineering and engineering technologies in forensics.
