New partner of Silesian University of Technology in Southeast Asia
On the map of international cooperation of the Silesian University of Technology a new partner university appeared – the State University of Surabaya (Universitas Negeri Surabaya - UNESA) from Indonesia. The Memorandum of Understanding, constituting the basis for the cooperation, was signed on the 5th of September by the Polish side and on 10 September by the Indonesian side. The ceremony of handing over the signed documents took place on the 10th of September in the presence of the Rector of UNESA, Prof. Dr Dwi Cahyo Kartiko, Vice-Rector for Planning, Development, Cooperation and Information and Communication Technology on behalf of UNESA and Prof. Mariusz Stępień, Head of the Department of Power Electronics, Electrical Drives and Robotics, coordinator of cooperation with UNESA, from the Silesian University of Technology.
The presentation of the documents was preceded by a seminar devoted to the presentation of research and didactic potential of both universities and a discussion on the directions of bilateral cooperation between universities. UNESA is one of Indonesia’s major universities and one of the largest universities in the province of East Java, educating more than 30 thousand students. The agreement with the Silesian University of Technology is for UNESA the third agreement with a Polish university (after the University of Wrocław and UMCS), the first one focused on cooperation in technical and engineering areas.
The visit of Prof. Mariusz Stępień at UNESA was associated with the implementation of a didactic internship under the project “Silesian University of Technology, a university supporting the staff on the way to perfection.” As part of the two-week internship, various activities took place, mostly at the Faculty of Engineering of UNESA. The most important of them were a seminar for the staff of the Faculty of Engineering devoted to the subject of new material technologies in electrical engineering, didactic lectures for students, including a plenary lecture within the framework of “Studia Generale” for a group of over 200 students and mentoring of scientific circles implementing projects related to various forms of energy transformation.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding and the implementation of the didactic internship at UNESA are further steps strengthening the cooperation with this important academic centre, which was started a few years ago by the visit of Dr Hanna Zakiyya at the Silesian University of Technology. For UNESA, our University is also an important scientific partner. This is confirmed by a note on the university’s website, reporting on the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding:
