Net-Zero Poland seminar
What the road to achieving climate neutrality in Poland may look like and what role different stakeholders play in this process – a seminar was held at the Centre for New Technologies as part of the Net-Zero Poland project, the leader of which is the Silesian University of Technology and Princeton University is a partner.
Net-Zero Poland is a unique initiative combining scientific research, technological modelling as well as social issues related to the energy transformation and decarbonization of the economy. The project, led by Prof. Anna Skorek-Osikowska from the Department of Power Engineering and Turbomachinery at the Silesian University of Technology relies on accurate mapping of energy infrastructure and industrial facilities and indicating practical solutions for decarbonization of various sectors of the economy.
Participants of the seminar had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the assumptions of the project, as well as the complexity of the challenges faced by scientists modelling the paths of decarbonization of the Polish economy.
Climate change, as the panellists noted, is a process that requires cooperation beyond one sector of the economy and strong, long-term institutional foundations. The priorities indicated above all predictable regulations, bold investment decisions and building public understanding of changes.

The panel was attended by:
- Michał Kurtyka – Minister of Climate and Environment in 2019-2021, President of COP24, Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Net-Zero Poland,
- Agata Romanowska – Project Manager, DISE ENERGY,
- Jędrzej Wójcik – Coordinator of the “Elektroenergetyka” Program, Energy Forum,
- Rafal Bialy – decarbonization Manager, Grupa Azoty S.A.,
- Jacek Kalina – Coordinator of the SET-HEAT Project, Silesian University of Technology.
- The moderator of the panel was Wojciech Uchman (KMiUE, SUT).
The speakers presented the opportunities and prospects of energy transformation in various sectors, but also the challenges related to decarbonization that must be faced on the way to Net-Zero. The transformation of the economy toward climate neutrality is not only a technical change, but a profound civilizational process, requiring cooperation of the world of science, economy, politics, and active involvement of society.
