Modern Student Zone at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering
It will be a place where students will be able to integrate, relax between classes and teach or implement joint projects – a modern Student Zone has been opened at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology. The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, the authorities of the Silesian University of Technology, the city of Zabrze, as well as doctoral students and students for whom this place was created.
Students will have at their disposal comfortable sofas, poufs, tables for work, an office room, and a kitchen where they will be able to prepare hot drinks or reheat a meal. The zone is also equipped with a wireless network and an interactive whiteboard.
- This is the most modern Student Zone at our University, there is a place for rest, networking, joint work, and even a kitchen, it is absolutely something unique - emphasized the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology Prof. Marek Pawełczyk.
The zone will be a great place for student integration.
-Science is not everything. Studies are also a preparation for adult life, in which, in addition to knowledge, the ability to establish contacts is also necessary. In order to learn this, you need to have good conditions. This area offers such opportunities. Here, students will be able to work together, talk, share their own passions – adds the Rector.
The Student Zone was created as part of the project "Modernization of the laboratory base and didactic infrastructure of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering for the needs of project-oriented education". Nine laboratories were also renovated and equipped as part of the project. The money comes, among others, from an additional subsidy from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
It is important that such zones are created. The modern generation of young people not only focuses on issues of science and intellectual development, but also attaches great importance to integrating, spending time together in a friendly environment. This is especially important after the pandemic, when we were closed and isolated from each other for several months. That is why a place where students can meet, talk, exchange experiences is extremely necessary – said the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, Prof. Marek Gzik.
As emphasized by the Dean of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering Dr Hab. Eng. Marcin Basiaga, Prof. SUT, the creation of the Student Zone was one of the first and most important tasks of the new Dean’s College. “We wanted the students to have their place at this faculty, their space where they can rest after classes, during the break between classes, meet and discuss, for example, planned projects,” said the Dean.
Vice President of Zabrze Tomasz Olichwer, present at the ceremony, pointed out that it is very important for the city that the University is developing taking care of its students. “We are aware that a higher school in the city is a potential, a chance for development and that these young people will live and work here for the development of our city,” he added.
The new zone was very popular with students who came to the grand opening.
- We lacked such a place, for a long time we had to use the zone in the neighbouring department, now we have ours. You know, sometimes, we have a “window” between lectures, sometimes classes will shorten, and we can sit here in peace, learn, finish some projects or reports. We lacked just such a quiet, peaceful place – said Weronika Cholewa, a third-year student. – We can also drink something warm here, make ourselves tea or coffee, have a second breakfast – added Jacek Cmok, a first-year student.
The construction of the Student Zone at the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering took 3 months.
