Microworld Week at the Silesian University of Technology

We invite you to the Microworld Week at the Silesian University of Technology. The event is carried out as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024. During the event, issues related to the construction of animate and inanimate microworlds will be discussed.

We live in a specific dimension of size, between atomic scales and the vast structures of the cosmic web. Many elements of the world that surround us every day are not visible to the naked eye. Right next to us, life goes on  on a completely different scale - the microscale.

During Microworld Week, we invite you to take a journey together into invisible microworlds and meet their miniature heroes, including bacteria, fungi and protozoa and the secrets they hide, including their positive properties. What can we learn from them? Can we use this knowledge in practice? Participants will learn all this during various activities, during which they will learn about issues from many scientific areas underlying numerous micro-worlds, discover the connections between them, and expand their knowledge about the possibilities of using them in building a better macro-world.

The event is therefore addressed to children, teenagers and adults and all other interested people who want to learn the secrets hidden in the various microworlds surrounding us. It is also a proposition for those who have never thought about all this.

 Under the supervision of scientists, participants will discover the "mega puzzles" of microworlds and learn about their smallest and largest objects. During the week, issues related to the construction of animate and inanimate microworlds that participants will be able to explore and look at,  will be delt with thanks to the use of microscopic techniques. Thanks to numerous scientific workshops, participants will learn about various methods of analysing microworlds and look at them from an economic point of view.

Suggestion of selected events:

  1. “Microworld in our kitchen" - workshops for children, teenagers and adults showing the possibilities of using chemicals and microorganisms, i.e. bacteria and yeast in kitchen practice;
  2. “With a glass and an eye" - microscopy workshops for children and teenagers showing the possibilities of visualizing and imaging micro-objects, including microorganisms;
  3. “Seeing the invisible" - workshops for children, teenagers and adults explaining the methods and possibilities of cultivating microorganisms;
  4. “On the trail of blurred micro traces" - detective workshops for children and teenagers presenting techniques used in forensics to make biological traces visible;
  5. “Hidden guardians of plants, or about the bacteria that feed and defend" - workshops for young people explaining the possibilities of using positive microorganisms to control plant growth;
  6. “Bacteria can break down many pollutants. What are your superpowers?” – workshops for young people presenting the ability of microorganisms to clean the environment;
  7. “What can we learn from nature - brilliant microorganisms and intelligent materials" - workshops for youth and adults;
  8. “Invisible representatives of the microworld" - screenings of Grzegorz Lankosz's films with the artist's guest participation, combined with workshop elements - for children, teenagers and adults;
  9. A series of popular science lectures discussing the elements of the living and inanimate microworld, their mutual dependencies, necessity and possibilities of use;
  10. “Fascinating microworld" - outdoor reading of books about the microworld and "micro board games"
