Mentoring program of the Silesian University of Technology

The Silesian University of Technology solemnly inaugurated the 5th edition of the "Spread your wings" mentoring program dedicated to pupils of secondary comprehensive schools run by the university. This school year, 8 pupils from ALO (Academic Secondary Comprehensive School) in Gliwice and Rybnik joined the program.

Its aim is to develop the intellectual potential of the best post-secondary school pupils, while supporting their personal development and preparing them to start their professional careers.  As part of it, pupils will benefit from various forms of support aimed at acquiring new competences and developing their scientific potential.  The most important assumption is that they will be able to learn from their mentors, scientists from the Silesian University of Technology with recognized research and application achievements. Opening the inauguration ceremony of the 5th edition of the program, the rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk emphasized that the mentoring program of the Silesian University of Technology enables pupils, above all, to develop their passions and scientific interests, but also stimulates interest in technical sciences. The Rector also noted the great importance of the program for improving the quality of education of future students. - The mentoring program also prepares future student candidates. If we want to have good graduates, we must do this work much earlier than October 1st, when first-year students are matriculated and integrated into the academic community- said the rector.

Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk added that the idea of education in terms of developing knowledge guided the Silesian University of Technology when it established two secondary comprehensive schools operating today in Gliwice and Rybnik.

On September 22nd this year the ceremonial inauguration of the 5th edition of the mentoring program for pupils of Academic Secondary Schools of the Silesian University of Technology entitled “Spread your wings” took place. The event was hosted by the Rector of the Silesian University of Technology, prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk, Vice-Rector for General Affairs, prof. Bogusław Łazarz, Vice-Rector for Infrastructure and Promotion, Tomasz Trawiński, prof. SUT and Director of the College of Studies prof. Anna Chrobok

During the ceremony, letters of appointment were presented to both pupils of the Academic Secondary Comprehensive Schools of the Silesian University of Technology and their mentors, academic teachers of the university. Pupils participating in the program clearly express their expectations - I would like to develop my interests in the field of computer science, programming, mainly algorithms. I want to learn practically how to use the skills I already have - says Maksymilian Kula from ALO Gliwice. - I hope that participating in the mentoring program will give me a lot of knowledge and experience. I am interested in physics, programming and electronics - adds Jan Bober, a pupil of ALO from Rybnik. His mentor is dr hab. Eng. Piotr Przystałka, prof. of SUT. The scientist participates in the program for the second time and shares his experiences - My previous mentee is now a student at the Silesian University of Technology and, still developing his interests, he is building Mars rovers. What can I offer to Jan? Certainly knowledge and experience from implementing projects in cooperation with companies, so I will show him how to apply what he learns in industry – said prof. Przystałka

36 pupils took part in all previous editions of the mentoring program intended for pupils of Academic Secondary Comprehensive Schools of the Silesian University of Technology. In the current school year, 10 pupils from previous editions continue their participation in the program. It is worth adding that several students who graduated from general academic high schools are still participating in the student mentoring program dedicated to the best post-primary school graduates starting their studies at the Silesian University of Technology.
